i have an 86 xj700 and i recently replaced my clutch disks because under hard acceleration the clutch would slip. i took 1 clutch disk and 1 steel to local dealer to purchase and they said the steels were fine. taking their "expert" advice i only replaced the fiber disks. it still slips under hard acceleration. I am wondering what it could be? i have adjusted it several times with no luck. should i have replaced the steels and springs as well? any help would be greatly appreciated! i am also looking for a good windshield for my bike. any good ones out there???

Could it be the type oil you use?
I had some slipping but changed to motorcycle oil and the problem has
    become less.
I have the parts to do a clutch but waiting for a break until I switched oil.

i changed oil 2 weeks ago and used motorcycle oil which is what i have been using. i have been reading some threads and think i am going to replace the springs this week. everyone seems to suggest it so i am going to try that.

-You should have replaced the springs, by all means. If the steel plates weren't burnt, warped, or the teeth mushrromed, then they were most likely fine as the shop said. Did you clean up the steel plates with Scotchbrite or the like?

-BillB is right; the wrong type of oil can play havoc with a wet clutch. You want to use an oil specifically for motorcycles, perferrably a conventional 20W40 or 20W50. Automotive oils contain friction modifiers these days and our clutches don't like them.

If you're not running the wrong oil, I'd say springs for sure.

    I'm assuming it's correctly adjusted.

*** I gotta type faster *** At your mileage, springs are a good bet. Look in my clutch article for the parts about wear on the basket and hub; if those parts are worn so that plates are hanging up it could also be a problem. http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29541.html

(This article contains a lot of 550 specific stuff, but the basics apply to all clutches.)
