Hello I am rebuilding a 1980 XJ650 and the brake master cylinder is going to have to be replaced. Does anyone have a decent on that they would sell. I really would appreciate it. Just send me a message with the price and we will go from there. Thanks PAPPY

I've got one that I bought complete with both calipers but they were for the maxium I guess because they weren't correct for my turbo. The master cylinder definitely works because I used it to pop out my pistons while I waited for my original master cyl's rebuild kit to arrive. Let me know if you're interested and I'll pm you what I paid, not looking to make money off of a member, just would like to get back my investment.

It's not the same M/C if yours has two calipers. His 650 has a single caliper; the M/C has a different bore size and reservoir. The dual-caliper M/C could create a really touchy brake if used with only one caliper as it was designed to operate two.

I just googled 1980 XJ650 and up came a ton of pics, most with dual calipers (appears to be the standards and seca's) so I'm not sure why if as you say, they should only have one.

Either way Pappy, if your bike only has one caliper, you don't need the brake system that I have. Fitz is right about that...NEVER use a master cylinder made for a dual caliper on a single caliper system unless you find that it's the same part number. I'm a firm believer in not taking any chances with the single most important safety device on your bike, the front brake!

Thanks guys, my bike does have the single front disc. Hopefully someone with that master cylinder will see my post. By the way I need a set of the rubber boots that go between the air box and the carbs in case anyone has a set they don't need and would sell. I appreciate everyone looking out for each other with these things, I appreciate you.

Pappy, sorry I couldn't help you with the M/C but check the diameter of the boots that you need. In the plumbing trade, we use a very similar looking device called a fernco coupling. It's made in a variety of sizes and you can cut the length to fit. I've been out of the field for over 25 years but they came to mind when I built my modified GT550 and they worked like a charm. They also are much cheaper then any boots at around 5 bucks a piece.

The USA-Market "standard" 650 was the Maxim, and it only had a single disc. The 650R ("Seca") only came to the US for one year, '82, and it had dual discs, as did the Turbo. All of the other US-Market XJ650s had a single disc.

To aid in an eBay search, according to the fiche, pn 4H7-25850-02-00, the 650 Maxim M/C, was also common to the early 750 and 920 Virago, as well as virtually every year of 535 Virago up through the 2000 model year, and the '81 XS1100.

Pappy, I have a master cylinder for a 81 maxim 650, but it will need to be cleaned and rebuilt. You're welcome to it, but I suspect that by the time you buy this from me shipped and then buy a rebuild kit, you might as well buy a new mc, like I did. Chacal has them.
Also, have you upgraded to steel braided brake lines yet? If not, I highly recommend doing so.
Make me an offer on my mc if you really want it.
