ok so i'm new to this site and to bike "customizing" I dont know if there's anything already on here about this but... I have a 82 xj750 and I'm wanting to "open up" (cut off lol) the exhaust. I dont plan on doing pods to the carbs just yet but i was wondering if i modded the exhaust if i'd have to jet the carbs. I sure hope not. But any help is greatly appreciated.

This post should be in the xj modifications section. You will more than likely have to shim the needle, or adjust idle/pilot mixtures. Maybe, and maybe not re jet. I would hold off on chopping the exhaust off, maybe just get a drill and start opening holes in the end of your exhaust pipe till it is as loud as you need it. Probably less chance of having to re jet and such.

I wouldn't drill the mufflers, either. If they're original and in good shape, you'll destroy their value. Further, due to their design, just drilling holes in the end caps won't do much to make them louder.

Aren't the mufflers on the 750's, Seca and Max, unboltable? I know the 650s are welded on as part of the system on each side, but I thought the "collector box" bikes all had clamped-on mufflers.

How about unbolt the mufflers, leave everything else alone, and see what it does to sound/performance? Then you could add some more free-flowing mufflers if it's too loud, before getting into carburetion changes.

You can't tell someone that your recommendation is a "Sure Fix"

We've been over this a few times.

You need to let people KNOW that each situation requires experimentation.

I have an 83 750 maxim mine unbolt behind the collector box. You don't want to take that collector out of the exhaust this will really kill your power I tried it and it ran like a dog. My suggestion is to remove the stock mufflers and run a pair of shorty mufflers you can buy them at JCWitney for about thirty bucks will give you some tone without killing your ears and performance.

YES, you will need to rejet/adjust you carbs to accommodate ANY change in the exhaust or intake.

    Rule of thumb:
If it aint stock then stock settings probably won't work.
Even if someone on here has the exact same bike with the exact same setup you'd still have to tinker with the settings. Don't do something irreversible until you are positive it will work.

spend a little money get a 4into1 exhaust and a dyno jet kit use the stage one stuff and tune it or have some one else tune it. i did it to mine and it made quite the difference and the 4into1 sounds awesome
