I found some images of this rad xj over at the Black Sheep Misfits blog. I'd love to hear what the purists have to say about this one...

I'd suggest Kevlar jeans. But if you wear shorts make sure your nuts are secure as under hard acceleration you may get castrated by one of those intakes! 8O

    Oh, boy.
How many people think the placement of those Pipes is something that needs to go back to the Etch-A-Sketch.

    That's a FAIL.
Even with some Metal Rod added to prevent getting burned, ...
The Pipes are at "Ear Level".

So, ... Not only do you have a high risk of being badly BURNED!
You get to wreck your HEARING, ... too!

I like it. Minimal wiring and a real head turner. He took a $300 bike and made it his. It has nice flow.

To be fair, even if I did take a poke at this guys bike, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Some guys ride Decked out touring machines, others ride crotch rockets, some ride big Harleys, yet others ride the Harley look-a-likes.
When it's all boiled down, it's still two wheels and on any bike forum, isn't that what it's all about?
Everyone has opinions and should get a fair say when it comes to postings. When you do make a post you have to take the positive with the negative, especially when it comes to pictures. That being said, I don't care for the bike too much, but I bet the guy that built it thinks it's the best bike on the road, as we all feel about our own ride(s).
So yeh, there are things that can be pointed at on this bike, but the guy either doesn't care or can't afford to fix just now, so live and let live.

Hmpf, I don't know what brought that on, but I just felt like saying it.......just what a forum is all about I guess. :?

Aw i can smell the exhaust fumes now . your clothes would smell all the time. What happens when you stop exhaust would be blowing on your legs. But if he likes it thats all that matters

I like the bike. Although the only XJ parts I see are rims, shaft, and motor, it has a mean look to it. It certainly doesn't look too comfortable for the long hauls though. Check out how he mounted the speedo, on the bottom triple, nice!

OK, the bike as a whole...is ugly!

    BUT:
He got it to run with an open intake and exhaust.
    It's a hard-tail, but he mounted a mono-shock to the seat...nice.
The lines of the handlebars, tank, seat, and "racing cowl" flow rather nicely.
The exhaust is symetrical...which would cost big $ if it were chrome instead of rusty.

So, for a rat bike, it's actually got some pretty good engineering.

I still think it's ugly, but you can always look past the ugly to find a little bit of beauty.

I think the reason I like this bike so much is the fact that it is completely different from every other generic bobber or half-cafe mods that are all I ever see made from an XJ. To each his own taste, but for me I love the rat style look when coupled with competent engineering and sleek design. There are a million cool looking XS bratsyle choppers out there, but for me, being an XJ owner myself, it's inspiring to see someone doing it with a bike that most people wouldn't.

    I like it!!

I seriously doubt that bike gets ridden much anyway. If it was mine, I'd do the pipes a little different so I could ride for more than 5 minutes at a time, but other than that, ride the heck out of it!!

Very nicely done frame in my opinion. Very swoopy bends instead of the typical tubing-bender bent stuff.

This is my favorite part about bikes, the wld, weird, and different are the ones that get noticed.

Ya think? He probably lives three blocks from the bar and pushes it around the corner.

Brings new meaning to the phrase "fresh roasted nuts."

Absurd. I like to ride my motorcycles, it's why I own them. That thing can't be ridden for more than 10 minutes at a go, not over bumps, or in the rain and then sitting stopped... we won't even go there.

    But it's "rad" alright.

Being a 1st bike purist, I do like the overall rat-like look. However, I'd probably not ride it with the pipes that close to my legs.

i would like to see it with a rider on it, for a better idea of where legs/nuts/pipes go.

if you break it down though, there is a lot of nice work on that thing.

from my experience by myself or on thechopperunderground, people on chops will ride in far worse conditions than those that own road sofas and stock bikes.

and yes, Fitz, it will go over bumps.
it baffles me as well, that you guys would think he doesnt ride it but 3 blocks to the bar. ITS A FUGGIN RAT BIKE! look at the mud on it! its no trailer queen, its got a rusty drive shaft, it's been driven in water...

Sorry, I don't think it is cool at all. I am a 60's child so I guess I have a whole different outlook on cool but that thing looks like you know what to me.
Sorry but this is my opinion. Put it this way, I would never buy it. I kind of feel sorry for the bike.
Again, this is just my own personal opinion.

Gregu, I think you wrote intending to be ironic, and I always welcome irony as it is a product only of the brightest minds (no irony here, I promise!). However... I beg to difer that it is a "XJ Purist Sentiment" that permeates the opinions so far! We all make mods, but never at the risk of damaging our eardrums or the family jewels!
Everyone is free to do as they see fit, that is a given. Just as much as all of us are entitled to have our own opinions, to spill they out and be heard. This is what makes us "such a great group".

I like it. Outside the box thinking and lots of late nights in the gargae making it all work together. That is "his" bike now!

I do often wonder though (as a chopper rider) why people feel that choppers don't get ridden? I'm not talking the billet barges that a credit card and logo'd leather coat only riding to the latte bar at the stealership, but garage built bikes like this one. I ride with a group of ecclectic riders, to put it mildly, that I would challenge anyone on a comfy road sofa or geezer glide to put on near as many miles! We do a 3 day ride every year as a fundraiser/party that covers more than a 1000 miles in those 3 days and the rules stipulate that only catastrophic break downs can be put on the trailer...everything else get's fixed on the roadside with what you brought with you, and that the bike must be heavily modified and self-built.

That guys has a lot of thought into that bike's design and fabrication and I bet he rides the crap out of it!!!

Now that is one awesome looking cafe/chop, Id hapilly ride that for miles, my only criticism is the ugly thing behind the headlight, apart from that I think its awesome, a very nicley done bike and an obviously well ridden one.

    ^^^ LOL... :D

I have no doubts that a lot of homebuilt chopper guys ride the crap out their bikes, I'm just saying that particular exhaust setup doesn't look like it would be able to be ridden for long. I'm a member over at thechopperunderground.com too, so I know how the homebuilt chopper guys are. I'm just saying, for my personal taste, I'd run the pipes different, because it looks like a leg burner for more than a 5-10 minute ride.

BTW, I love the way the pipes look.

This bike is hideous. It just looks like every other chopped bike.

Hell of a way to ruin a bike though

Seriously, I picture a guy like this having the same mentality as a Harley rider. Thinks he is the baddest and coolest thing ever because it is stupidly loud.

I also doubt he rides this much. If he does, he is an idiot for not doing proper maintenance. Shows how much he cares about his "creation"

you're right, he must be mental for "ruining" an over produced japanese motorcycle that a large portion of the motorcycling world wouldn't give a second look at in its stock form.

I guess your opinion of never must differ from mine. Modified bikes move pretty fast around here. Every bike I've "ruined" and then sold has had a new owner within a couple weeks of being put up for sale, and made me 3-4x my investment.

I was speaking about ravenz07 saying bikes like this "never" sell. That's why I quoted him in this reply and addressed you in a separate post.

I assumed the "we" you spoke of was the xj community, which does include myself. I was simply stating that some of the mods I've made have been regarded as unsafe, irresponsible and downright dumb by others, although my viewpoint may differ.

It was 17 F yesterday morning when I left for work. I sure could have used some of that heat up by my "family jewels". Maybe he could plumb in a heat exchanger off an old VW - now that would be rad!

If this was my ride I would have done a few things different but overall I like the looks of it. If you like a stock bike then this bike won't be for you. I personally like the stock look of an XJ but I also like a highly modified bike as well. Most of us have modified our bikes in some way. That is what gives us a personal connection to our rides. I would ride the heck outta this bike. I would change the exhaust and intake on this bike if it was mine though. A bike is more than a mode of transportation to us. It is a personal reflection of who we are. Riding a bike like this shows he doesn't want to be like everyone else. We could say that just riding an XJ makes us different.

Nice Bike! Beautiful curves and nice lines. Way to NOT be just another sheep in the heard.

But, but, but it's loud. You may go deaf. You may also wear earplugs under your helmet. Crazy as it sounds, I've heard of some people doing this.

But, but, but the exhaust looks like it can make your leg quite warm. A nice cup of coffee can make your mouth warm, too. How many coffee drinkers do we have here?

But, but, but it looks uncomfortable to ride. Ain't seen too many Lazy Boy recliners mounted on any of the motorcycles in the XJ galleries lately.

In the spirit of finding all the dangers of this thread, you can break a nail typing, so maybe some of you should be more careful and keep your comments to yourself...
