It's hard to tell with the picture but you should check on your handlebars and make sure that that wire doesn't plug in somewhere up there. I'm not sure but the clutch may have a switch that that plugs into but without seeing what the end looks like i can't say for sure.

looks like the broken end of the clutch switch, can't really see in the pic. Get a close up and trace where that wire goes.

I think it comes out of the huge bundle of the headlight wiring

Pretty sure that is the switch wire for the clutch.

It WAS the switch lead for the clutch switch. Actually, it still is, but the switch it's supposed to be permanently connected to is on the handlebar.

Read this, it explains everything: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=30354.html

    Ya needs a new one.

(The other end plugs into the flat GREEN connector inside the headlight shell.)

Yep, clutch switch was my first thought. Give Chacal a PM he will set you up with a new one.

The switch keeps you from starting in gear without the clutch pulled in.

Makes it so you cant start your bike in gear without pulling the clutch lever.

If it will start yeah. I think it will start in neutral without the clutch but I'm not sure. If it does then you can ride.

You will still be able to start in neutral and run the bike fine. The switch can be jumped so the system think the clutch is always pulled. Although it may be a safety risk if you start you bike in gear without pulling the clutch as the bike will run away.

Some sort of issue with my 750 SECA US import (UK bikes do not have that feature) just twisted the wires together so it thinks that the clutch is in all the time. Or you could reconnect it quite an easy job, all so it depends if you trust your neutral light.

So, to summarize (because your answer is there, in the posts above, but in bits-n-pieces:)

It's the clutch lever signal switch.

It tells the safety circuit that the clutch is in, so that you can:

Start the bike in gear, (with the clutch pulled in.)

Your bike will run with it broke and not bypassed; you just won't be able to start it unless it's in neutral. I DO NOT recommend bypassing it; either fix it (best) or leave it disconnected (safer than if bypassed.)

To fix it you'll need to replace it. They're not expensive.

Len carries two styles; they are documented in my article that I posted a link to. I just replaced both of mine; one was broken altogether, and my 16-YO son is about to start learning to ride that bike; the other one was falling apart (as described in the article) so I replaced it too.

    1: A picture is worth 1000 words.

    2: It's not clutch-switch related; so please:

3: Start a new thread "what is this bundle of wires?" and include a pic.

thanks for the help guys. I likely won't get around to this cable for a bit longer as I have to first worry about getting a Lead wire :)
