Note: Depending on how my interview goes this week, my funding may improve and influence my final decision.

So I picked up a good condition COMPLETE & Titled non-running 1982 XJ750J Maxim (same as my current ride) for cheap + towing expenses. The bike even has the security chain, tool kit and owners manual. At the moment I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. (There are definately a few parts I want to swap onto my bike).

I'm a strong believer in spare parts for a vehicle so old. So over the fall/winter I picked up the following CHEAP "spare parts".

    * Two sets of 750 carb sets - Neither cracked open yet for inspection/cleaning
    * CDI & Regulator - Not test but I figured they were hard to come buy for cheap
    * Gas Tank - (Tank ONLY) - Got it cheap off of eBay to replace my original tank I messed up - Recently repainted but not ready to use yet
    * Rear Seca Tire - Wanted the larger tire and maybe better MPG - Not bought new rubber yet - No rush
    * Damaged Atari + Gauges - Housing is trashed but maybe the gauges/computer is good - (2nd bike has busted Speedo)
    * Front Metal Fender - Wanted to paint fenders black and have a spare set for stock restoration
    * Rear Metal Fender and tail light assembly - Same reason as front fender
    * Keys Matching Gas Cap, Helmet Lock and Security Chain - I wanted a complete bike and it was a cheap set
    * I might have other stuff I forgot about
Yes its alot, but they were all pretty cheap and bought slowly :p

I have not done a full visual inspection of my 2nd bike, but cosmetically it is very good looking at 1st and 2nd glance. Not perfect, but neither is my 1st bike. Some parts look better and some look worse than my original bike's. There are a few things I will definately be swapping on the bike.

I know the parts bike is not running and definately needs carb work. (It sat for at least a year+ and the forum member had problems keeping it running well the last few years before that). The tire rubber is older and the speedo hub/cable are gone and the gauge is busted. Beyond that I'm not sure what else I need to get it running SAFELY yet.

I also know these bikes do not necessarily give you good ROI after fixing them up. So I'm not sure if I will keep it for rarer parts (muffler & exhaust, side covers, carbs, tank, seat, etc), partially part it out, sell the frame/title or eventually make it run (in some form).

So besides my OCD insanity and pile of spare parts I already have, what would YOU do with it or suggest I do with it?

FYI: I don't have a garage and it would be under a cover long term.

Decent look of bike Taken with Pictures

Good: Overall still impressed and in good cosmetic condition.
Bad: Silicone used in place of proper seals/gaskets in a few places. :(
Mediocre: Trunk backrest leather a bit rough. Luggage Rack/Back Rest frame one broken bolt held in place with hose clamp.
Common: Original Fuse panel. Some oil seapage here and there.
Note: Original headlights and an extra battery in a box in my car.

    Now for the pictures:

If you're keeping it outside, counting on that exhaust or other metal parts at some unknown future date may not be the best idea.

Check it out throughly, compression and all then if it's minial stuff to fix it'd be worth it if you want a second bike or to sell. won't get a fortune for it but should do ok depending on what it needs.

Or crate up the whole thing, spare parts and all, and sent it to me. I'll take it off your hands free of charge.

The red one is the spare bike. Mine is black and covered in the pictures.

That is my plan when I get some time and decent weather.

    For Free? Not exactly

If your finances improve fix up that bike! (The one in the pictures) That would give you a bike to ride while working on the other one. Then get a shed to store the bikes in.

If your finances are such that you can’t afford two bikes keep the best/ hardest to get parts and sell the rest.

It looks like the shape that one is in it would be worth covering until the money is good and fix that one up also. I wish I could get that lucky and find another 1100 in that kind of shape. very nice find.

I hear you and I'm keeping that in the back of my mind.

This bike only had 3 prior owners. The PO bought it from a co-worker who bought it from his brother. Bike originally sold in CO. Kinda cool knowing the 3 owners worked to keep it in good usable condition.

FYI: The wife and I drove ~500 miles with a U-Haul trailer and made a spring break vacation out of it [3 days of shopping in and near mall of america]. (She's a teacher thus the break).

LOL - I found an old post of mine (Nov 2010) where I was asking questions about a LOCAL running but leaky bike for only $100 more than I just paid. (Excluding towing rental/towing supply costs).

Timing/$$/Wife approval varies with time - ROFL

Regardless this bike does have a few extras I'm putting on my runner. (Guard with Foot Pegs, Luggage Rack with Backrest and a different Vetter fairing I'll save or possibly sell. (Less common than my WindJammers).

If you decide to you want to get rid of one of the 750 carb banks let me know. I sure could use one.

    Bob,

I learned my lesson long ago about storing a bike outside. No matter how tightly you cover it, Mother Nature will trash it quite quickly! Your best bet IMO is to remove all of the serviceable/valuable parts then seal the engine as best you can after spraying the entire bike with a heavy mist of WD40. I cannot view the pics here in the office but all of the "good" parts such as the seat, mufflers, carbs, handlebar controls& electrical components etc will fit in a small corner of your basement. It's better then leaving them on a bike to be stored outside.

Hadn't seen you here lately, was wondering where you were.....

That bike is way to nice to part out. Look into getting the title and ride it or sell it whole.
