I've never heard of colortune before this site, I've always used a mercury syncronizer, and love them, so what's the difference in them, do you need one for each cylinder, or just do one cylinder at a time.

your going to want both a colortune (sparkplug) and a set of sync tubes.
the colortune gives you a veiw into the combustion chamber. to see what color the explosion is. hope this helps a little.

The colourtune plug is for checking the mixtures AT IDLE directly by looking into the cylinders and seeing the colour of the flame. Excellent tool - especially if you're changed to a high-flow air filter and/or an aftermarket exhaust.

For synchronizing the carbs, good old standard mercury carb sticks will do, but if you really want a tool that'll last and not have to worry about toxic mercury getting sucked into the engine or spilled - then you want to check this out: The Morgan CarbTune II
This uses high-precision stainless rods sliding in plastic tubes to replace the mercury -- never have to worry about it. I've got both, and love 'em! 8)

If you look around, especially at ebay, you can find them at pretty good prices

I bought a colourtune a few months ago on ebay.co.uk for £28.00. Has to be worth looking around a little.

The price I saw on the Morgan website for the Colortune alone was 35 British Pounds, which currently converts to about $68, plus another 3 Pounds for shipping (about 6 bucks).

I think I will be buying a 12mm colortune soon for my XJ550. I have to resync the carbs anyway, so I figure why not tune the entire system. So do I balance first, then color tune, then check balance again? OR do I color tune then balance, then check the tune again?

I expect you would want to balance, color tune, then balance again to be sure you have the tightest tune. All after an oil change, new plugs and an air filter.

got new plugs, K&N replacement air filter is on the way, and my Shell Rotella and 3 new oil filters are in the garage now. New fuse block, carb boots, re-adjusted cam tensioner, valve clearances are checked, entire wiring harness pulled, cleaned with contact cleaner, and lubed with dielectric grease, and everything is cleaned up. So it is almost time...just a few small odds and ends to tie up, then tune time.

Yep! That's the way to go. At carb clinics I hook up the carb sticks and monitor them while colortuning. Mixture screws affect sync and sync affects mixture screw setting. The mixture screw controls the fuel and the sync controls the air. While setting #1 carb I will check the sync between 1 and 2 then adjust the mixture. If #1 goes way up or down in vacuum pulled then I know #2 needs to be done next and I may have to colortune #1 again if the vacuum pulled changes appreciably while adusting #2. It so common to start to tune a bike and find one cylinder missing either constantly or intermittently. A dead cylinder will show up on the carb sticks and tell you to colortune that one before anything else.
On another note. The lest expensive way to colortune is to buy just the plug. That will cost about $36.USD. But you will have to make a lead wire to fit the plug and the sparkplug wire. And without the periscope tube it is only possible to see the flame color well in either a dark garage or at night. To buy just the plug click on the shopping cart order link and then on the colortune plug. That will take you to all the options or purchasing.

shopping cart order link where? At Morgan Carbtune's website??

I would rather get a kit instead of having to piece parts together.

Yes at the Morgan web site. Sorry about that.
I think most would prefer a kit but some have spent so much money getting to this point that SWMBO must be appeased. ;)

yeah I'll keep the fan on it when I am sync'ing it. If after syncing something doesn't seem right, I'll be tuning the fuel mixture. When I took out the plugs after riding it last fall, they all looked good except #3. That one was all black and sooty. I turned the mixture screws all the way in to see where they were set and #1, 2 & 4 were at 2.5 turns, but #3 was at 3.5 turns. I set them all at 3 turns and will be syncing there.
