OK. the tune-up is progressing. I recieved my CD's (Thanks so much to all those amazing guys and gals that produced such a great set!). the new rubber intakes are ordered, (didn't brake a bolt) and I'm about to start on the carb's. Now, what about a paint for the muffler (flat black). The exhaust manifolds still look really good, but the bottom of the muffler has quite a bit of rust, so if anyone has found a good muffler or manifold paint that lasts for a season or two please let me know.

The high temp VHT paints have received many endorsements from other XJer's. They also have a high temp caliper paint rated to 900F. I painted my cylinder with Duplicolor high temp engine paint and it has stood up for 2 full seasons.

Find your headlight. go back to the frame. The neck, or steering collar, (what the handlebars are attached to) should have the number stamped on the right side. You will have to turn the handlebars to the left and maybe move the wires coming down from the headlight and handlebar switches ...... of course there's always the chance they have been filed off!
    (sad to say)

Everyday BBQ paint works "as Adverstised"
Personally, over the last 30 yrs.. sigh..I've always found VHT paints to be pricey and give mediocre results every single damned time.. I'm obviously a slow learner, as I kept trying.
Don't you be : Apply BBQ paint (Yr choice) onto a preheated (propane torch) exhaust , the paint will smoke upon cntact with the hot metal, and cure instantly.. this has proven to give good result for many users on 'other' moto forums.. try it , it works :)

I put the bbq paint on mine without pre heating and it did just fine. I did pre-scuff the chrome with a scotchbrite pad quite a bit.
