Have replaced stock bearings in my turbo with the tapered type,

I've removed all the bottom races and the 2 cups in the stock,

bearings have gone in fine but there's noticeable play

    Where'd i go wrong?

The locking nuts aren't tighter than tight but even still shouldn't be that level of movement?

Check to make sure you got the races fully seated.

Not sure. My 600 had tapered bearings on it and as far as I can remember it just had the outer races and the bearings. Tightening up the stem nut took up all the slack. Does the top tapered bearing move up and down freely?

Had to lightly tap the cap into place but they move fine

As you say the locking nuts probably not quite tight enough

I tapped the nut round progressively (Yes, I know - the c spanner didn't fit very well!), moving the bars side to side - to check the bearings werent too tight and pulling/pushing the forks at the axle to see that they werent quite tight enough!
