Well a little bit more progress made today when I picked up the XJ1100 exhaust from being ceramic coated. It is in far better shape that I originally thought when I took it in. There was some early signs of rust in the collection area connections, but was easily removed with buffing. Now now rust, and everything looks like new or almost. This was and inside and out ceramic coating with the exception of the mufflers (due to the baffles). The shop that did this is the same "race shop" that does my powdercoating on my other bikes and I have never had a problem with their work.

Take a look and tell me what you think.

Before taking them in there was very little rust (very, very little) and the concern for it to get worse was the deciding factor. Now, knowing the inside and out is ceramic coated, I can feel pretty good they will last a long time. Good insurance since these XJ1100 exhausts are so damn difficult to find.

What did it cost, Jamie ? I have had several sets of headers done in sterling silver & been pleased with the results, but it ain't cheap, I paid about 300 smacks, & the better condition your pipes are in the better the results,
    of course.

Did you have to strip them first?

No, I didn't have to do anything to them. They did the complete inside and out ceramic coating (with the exception of the mufflers inside, due to the baffles). They charged me $275 and now I won't have to worry about rust for a long, long time.

Looks nice, I have never had any ceramic coated exhaust. How well does the coating hold up ? Will it still ook that good in a few years?

It is permanent and will last forever if not abused, wrecked, etc. The shop guarantees the coating to last and not wear off, if it does, they will repeat at no cost to me. I've done other stuff and it looks as good years down the road as it does right now. For these rare exhausts (XJ1100), I would suggest this to keep them from rusting and preserve the OEM setup.

    Thanks Jamie
I'm going to look into having my XS11 exhaust coated. The XJ11 is in real good shape and I hope to keep it that way for a long time.

That was another reason I went this route to have it ceramic coated. If your XJ exhaust is good, coat it and keep it for sure. I can't stand the "MAC" systems for these bikes and the OEM XJ1100 exhausts are becoming almost obsolete. The picturese don't do it justice, but there isn't a spec of rust and looks really good.

Jamie, Im working on a 79 XS 750. I think this process would benefit some of the parts on the old girl. Maybe the whole frame.
Which company did you use for the plating?

    Bill,
I'm a big powdercoat "believer" on things such as the frame, swinger, center/side stand. The ceramic coating is great on the exhaust, but I don't know what else you would use the ceramic on. If I were to do it over again, I would have my frame cooked and blasted and then I would go over all the welds and beef up any areas that needed it before powdercoating.

The shop that did my exhaust and does my powdercoating is: www.performancecoatingsokc.com They do really good work and is a fully operational race shop. They also are the shop that powdercoated my cylinder and head a few weeks ago.
