I want to put a VHF radio on my 82 XJ750. It doesn't look like I can use the handle bar mounts thanks to the square bars. Does anyone have experience with using the other mounts? Which mount base do you think would work best?

If you are referring to the black plastics around the handle bars, there are removable with no modifications to reveal the normal bars.

Im not sure how they are removed but I just think they snap together or with some screws. It all depends on how u want to go about it, if your never going to put them back on just be heavy handed not bothering if they brake, or if u may want to reinstall them or just keep them jut give them a good going over to find where there may be any mounts. I don’t think your in danger of breaking any thing taking them of; hear is a pic of what the bars look like with them removed.

I think theres some mouting points they are the to holes with with the big bolt head in between the to just where the second key on the ring is resting.

Actually, the 750 Maxium might have a different handlebar set-up than the 750 Seca. Search for a parts diagram on a parts website.

I think your right, but they both still have a plastick cover over the bar mounts.

I was pretty sure it's a cast square bar, but I will double check tonight. My bar mounts are not like those pictured.

The one pictured is from a 750 Seca. You Maxim does have cast square bars.

Someone's got to have modified or used front ends of other XJs to incorporate standard handlebars. Maybe your answer is the seca parts (if you want to go that route)

I don't really need to change the bars - I like these well enough, and there are a few mounts that I can get to work. I was just posting to see if anyone else had already done this and see which mount they thought worked best. At the least I think I could use one of the brake res mounts, though I didn't really want it hanging out there that far.

I use one of THESE with a double socket arm and an aquabox for my GPS.

You should be able to screw the mirror stalk down through it to attach it.

RamMount also makes the balls with a female threaded hole and/or male stud sticking out. You can bolt one of the RamMount balls on to your handlbar upright through the hole that is already there (the one with the slot next to it). You have to take the little metal covers off the back side of the bars and pull the wiring out of the way...and then make sure the wiring and such will fit about the head of the bolt you used.
Sorry I don't have any pics to show you what I mean.
The link below is an example of the RamMount part:

These are in the components section on the website and they have lots of different variations. RamMounts are very good quality products.

I know exactly what you are talking about, and had been wondering how feasible that was or which RAM part to use. This is the best solution I've heard yet.

I had my GPS mounted to that spot for quite some time with no issues. I used a 1/4-20 bolt into a female ball fitting. TIGHT!
