What reasons - if any - for not being able to fit XJ600 (pre-Diversion) carbs to an '81 XJ650?

Probably been asked before, but if poss, then a cheaper option than parts for older Hitachis, surely?.

If not from an XJ600, any other models/makes that fit and run - after all, people have been fitting alternative carbs to bikes for donkey's years.

    Thanks, Nige

So your solution to needing to possibly replace your throttle shaft seals is different carbs? Have you talked to Len about international shipping?

If you want to go to all the trouble (remember no matter what you get, they will probably need to be completely rejetted) then you need to look for some NON-CV carbs of the same size. Why are you under the impression that the Mikuni CVs from a pre-Divvy XJ600 will be any cheaper/easier to deal with than your Hitachis? Trust me, if they're even close to the Mik's on the 550s, and they are, ain't no difference.

I'm not trying to be harsh; I've seen your bike. Why not bite the bullet, and clear up this last little problem? Remember, it's not really a problem, it's just the last vestige of age-reversal you didn't do.

Only thing that springs to mind is prediversion carbs are mikuni bs32's and not hitachi's

If they fit the inlet rubbers on the 81 and you have them jetted correctly, balanced, to match the 81's spec's it may work,

what does spring to mind is the Xj600 has a very straight head and very level carbs, the older bike may not, which will make flooding a problem

Air and fuel mixture will change depending the difference in size of carb bodies, hence them needing set to the older bike,

It may work, someone here will know better, i do know as i own a prediv if their carbs are not exactly right they love to flood and leak all over your nicely repainted engine

Am fairly sure though apart from their jetting and balancing theres little diff between the 650 and 750, except poss YICS versions, but not 100% on that

I don't believe they are going to work the 600 is based off the old 550 like fitz. The motors are physically smaller then the 650-750 smaller carbs as well as the spacing is different. You could put a set off a 750 on it would be a bit rich but changing a jet or two in each carb. But they would bolt right up to the old manifolds. I know its a pain in the butt to change the shaft seals but you know what you have when finished ad least.

FYI for the cost of TOTALLY rejetting a different CC set of carbs to the correct CC setup, you would normally be way better off buying the correct set regardless of shipping. At least that was my conclusion after talking to Chacal about what it really took to change CC size of same brand carbs.
