I have had a lot of trouble with Speedometers on my bike. I have gone through three used stocked speedometers on my bike and finally broke down and got an Acewell 2803 speedometer and tach from Electro sport. Here is a little break down of what I have done so far on the install.

When the part came in I spent some time studying the electrical diagram for the bike and the speedo. It is pretty straight forward but since I have never done anything like this before I asked my father-in-law for a little help. I wanted to stay away from modifying the stock wire harness as much as possible so I took a set of spare idiot lights, cut off the connector and soldered it the connectors that came with the Acewell.

There is one wire that does not connect to my adapter and that is a constant hot lead the powers the clock when the ignition is off. Currently I am shoving that wire in the ignition connector and holding it in place with electrical tape. That is failing miserably so I am still working on how to accomplish this. My First plan is to borrow a tool from my father in law to pull the wire out of the connector and solder the speedo wire to it. Hopefully I will be able to get it back into the connector.

Most of the people on this site have gotten the universal S connector which is a magnetic pickup. I decided to take a chance and get the S4 connector which is made to hookup to the speedo pickup on a Yamaha WR. I am really glad I took the chance it fits the speedo pickup on my Seca perfectly.

Next was getting the tach installed. It is just a single wire that you can either wrap around the spark plug wire or plug strait into the ignition coil. I want to plug straight into the ignition coil but I am having the same issues I have with the clock power. So for right now it is wrapped around the spark plug wire. The tach was a little erratic so I added a 1MOhm resistor per the instructions but it only made things much worse. So I will have to remove that and hopefully get the wire connected to the ignition coil one of these days.

Then it was just mounting the speedometer. I have no experience with metal fabrication at all so I mount the speedometer on the stock cluster mounting bracket.

I ran into a slight issue here as well. Since the screen is LCD it has an optimal viewing angle. And the way it is mount now I am out outside the viewing angle. Durring the day it is OK but when it is still dark during my morning commute all I see is blue. I found the best viewing angle with it mounted now is with my chin on the tank.

    From my point of view.

    Straight on.

I work for a lawnmower manufacturer and I have the prototype shop working on modifying a stock mount for me. I am hoping that will solve my viewing angle issues. They should finish it tomorrow. I'll hopefully get to post more pictures this weekend.

Hope you guys like it. I think it will look pretty good and hopefully last a long long time.

For those of you who have one of these speedometers, have you had the same issue with the viewing angle? The angle seems to be a little off to me do you think I have reason to contact acewell?

I mounted mine on my handlebars and the viewing angle is good for me. I do find that it is a little hard to see the signal light leds when the sun is behind me, but it is a sweet little unit with a great price!

Thanks for the info and pics! This is the unit I was looking at, I was wondering about the universal pickup VS the other cables, and this answered a few questions I had.

Finally got out with GPS today. I found out I was about 3-4 MPH fast on the speedometer. Knocked the wheel circumference setting down to 700 and it is right on now. I am still waiting for my new mount and the days I actually have time to work on the bike it has been too cold. I'll update more later.

Finally got out and and soldered the clock power lead and the tach lead. Pictures below. It was a little tricky doing it on the bike. I put some solder on the connector first it took quite a bit of heat so I don't think a cheap electric soldering iron would work.

I used the tool below to remove the original wire from the connector and then taped the wire I was going to add to the original wire. You notice in this picture I have the wrong wire pulled. This if for plugging the tach into the igniter.

Here we have it with the soldering done. It wasn't pretty but it got the job done. Sliding the the wires back into the connector took a little bit of work but not much.

I'm really happy with the result. I'm not losing power to the clock any more and that tachometer is a lot more stable. I'm still waiting on my speedometer mount to be finished. I really wish I had the equipment to do it my self. It would make the project even more fun. Oh well.

Doing this mod to myself. Where did you take the main power from, and did you use resistors for the led indicators?

Its been a while but I am pretty sure I wired it right into the ignition. That was about 2 years, a kid and an 800 mile move ago so I'm not 100% certain that is what I did. If you come up with a good way to mount the thing let me know. I still have not had time to figure it out my self.

i put the main power through a spare fuse that stays hot all the time, otherwise the clock doesn't stay on

Isn't there a wire into the ignition that is hot all the time? I might have gone there.

there my be but i had a spare on the new fuse panel so i used it. i wound up with a 2 meg resistor on the tach before it settled down
    LED's ? dono i got the cheapie without led's

There IS a +12V Hot Wire feeding the IGN Switch Pigtail in the Headlight Bucket.

It's the same RED Wire that runs to the Fuse Panel.

    RED = Hot

    RED w/ WHITE Tracer = +12V Switched.

Sorry I missed the resistor question. The only resistor I used was for the tach. I just soldered it inline and put some shrink tubing around it.
