Well today I was given a 81 xj650 from a friend. It needs a battery, LH bar switch and a new front caliper. It came with a front caliper but it doesn't fit the mounting holes on the fork. I'm wondering what this caliper goes to so I can sell it. And what is the correct one I need. Also what should I look for since it's been sitting for over a year. I have started with my friends battery, the throttle was sticking but other than that it sounded great.

I'll have to double-check, but while that appears to be a caliper for a Seca 650, I suspect it's not; but it looks similar enough that PO bought it.

To figure out what you need, we need to know what you have. I suspect a "Maxim-ized" Seca from how the sidecovers don't fit, but again I could be wrong. The front brakes were vastly different beteween the 650 Seca and Maxim models, as were the front forks.

It's hard to tell exactly WHAT you bike was to begin with, or what forks are actually on it without better pics. What's your "shorty" VIN, off the top of the transmission right above the clutch?

Yup, kinda need the VIN for this one.
    1981 650 = not a Seca (if you're in the USA)
Single disk on front also = not a Seca
Non-YICS 650 motor (if original) = 1982 Seca or prior year Maxim
The caliper might be off a Seca Turbo (?)
Also, can't see the cluster but that could be another clue
But if we had the shorty VIN we could tell you exactly what ya got. Or at least what the motor is from, then can check that against the VIN on frame to see if it matches.

Oh, btw, That seat is ugly. Just sayin'.

After it's running the seat is the first thing going. Ugly as hell and nearly the least comfy thing possible.
