    Yes, those are about right.
These bikes were made when the speed limit was 55 mph and Im sure there were geared around that number.
PLENTY of members here will tell you that pushing past 55 mph is fine and the bike does like it.
Lower RPMs can be achieved by running a Seca rear wheel which stands taller.

I usually hit 5500 rpm at 70 mph but I have a Seca 750 not sure if your maxim would be the same.

I'm hitting 5k at 55 mph on a 550 maxim. I would think a 750 would only be at about 3.5-4.0k rpm at 55 mph.......anyone else with a 750 who can chime in? What is your bike idling at?

That's probably a little low. But 5-5.5k seems high for 55mph on a 750. Hopefully someone on here can verify and point you in a direction to look at like compression, valves clearances, etc. Keep searching the forum using the search feature and I'm sure you'll see tons of threads about high idling. Hope that helps and welcome to the site!

Did you tuned up your bike? After I tuned up my bike for the first time that was one if things that I notice first. The rpm where lower and gas improvement. Before you get into the engine go for the carbs. Here at the shop even if a light is faulty we say "is always the carbs" LOL
