Exhaust silencer (muffler?)

Hi.

My xj700 has a 4 into 1 exhaust system but the silencer/muffler is obviously not a match with the downpipes etc, wrong shape and it doesn't fit. It has nothing at all in it, just a big fat empty tube, if I replace it with something that matches will I have to re-jet the carbs. The bike does not tick over too well and I wondered if this could be the reason.

Nobody answered you yet so here goes.

It's a good many years since I got down and dirty with a 'bike, but now in the first flush of irrisponsible oldness, I am getting the spanners out to my XJ550 Maxim and giving her a good service prior to touring Europe. (Moto gp ???)
Anyway, generally there needs to be a back pressure in the exhaust system to make sure the engine runs smoothly. Without baffles I guess your exhaust only back pressures when it is revving above a couple of thousand rpm. My guess is that you will need to get a set of silencers that match the bike and then do your valve clearences, then balance the carbs.

Thanks thats what I was thinking. I'll have to have a trip to the bike shop and see what's available. A geriatric born again? You have to look me up when your here, two mad old Englishmen on bike's in the village scattering the goats...
