Hello, i have just obtained my 1980 Maxim, with less than 50 miles of total riding time on my license. I had to ride through a canyon and on a freeway to get it home, had a blast. i am hoping to get info here on how to maintain and upgrade this bike.
    Cheers!

Welcome from S.C. Be sure to check rear brakes for delamination before riding bike again. Tons of info and support here.

Yeah, I am a new rider too! I had no hours on my license two weeks and 4 days ago. However, this past weekend went out with some friends and we did a 300 mile ride. I also had logged lots of time riding around the area where I live and to and from work. All in all I've logged about 700 miles in two and a half weeks. Experinced riders have told me I ride quite well and it is hard to tell I am a noob. I love my 82 XJ650! I've gotten so I dislike it when I 'have' to drive my car!

I hope all you "new riders" have checked your OLD BRAKES for delaminating shoes (in the rear.)

You cannot go by feel or how well they seem to work; you HAVE to look. Failure to attend to the issue if you have it can cause an unexpected rear wheel lockup. Read: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

CHECK YOUR REAR BRAKE NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T YET. You don't want your new hobby to come to a crashing halt. Literally.

My brakes are new as of last November and the bike had like 20 miles on it since its last state inspection. In Va every year your car/truck/bike whatever has to be inspected and all repairs made before they will issue you a new sticker. So, in Sept. I will check the back break but I would imagine they should last at least a few thousand miles.

You're probably right. However, do you "KNOW" for sure or are you taking someones word? It takes less than 1/2 hour to pull the wheel and then be positive. A life is a foolish thing to waste.

Yes I know because he showed me the reciepts for the pads and told me he installed them, the dude is a machanic by trade. His wife used to ride the bike so I am pretty sure he wasn't out to collect the life insurance....

Lol, doc2029, nice one! I'd still check, if anything, it's peace of mind and a good experience that helps you get to know the old girl. I have the money to get alot of the work I need done by someone, but have found myself doing it all myself and having a blast! Gives me alot of pride in the bike and much more peace of mind, not to mention more $ for gas to ride this beauty.....something to think about...have fun and ride safe! Congrats on your XJ!

PS, don't forget to put your model/miles in your sig and pictures are always nice for us to look at too :)
