My Xj600 won't shift above 2nd, neutral can be a pain in the neck to catch, checked clutch all seems well, though it won't change gear when no running either, and pulls real sluggish in first

    My thoughts

Bent shifter fork? how big a job to change

    Chain tension?

    Lost after that

Cheers in advance 89 xj600 if it helps

Bent shifter fork? Only maybe. More likely a jam up or broken spring in the shifter "mousetrap" which is behind the clutch, on the right side. That's a reasonably simple fix; replacing a shifter fork means splitting the cases (major.)

Chain tension? Is something you need to stay on top of at all times; not wait until you think it's causing a problem.

You will NOT be able to shift thru the gearbox without at least rotating the rear wheel as you do so. That much is normal.

How many miles on the bike?

25k on the engine that's in it now,

the spring you mentioned would be worth a look

it also doesn't change when it's moving under it's own power, not that it's been out on the road only just on the driveway not about to take it out if i can't get above 2nd

The spring broke in my 550. We could shift the transmission if you physically returned the shifter to the centre position after each shift replicating the spring function. You could try that prior to taking anything apart.
