Opened up the shifter side and pulled out the piece i could see that would not let me shift. Is it safe to run now or is it a must to change out guide as soon as posible.

Paranoia pays -- you should probably change it out regardless.

From what I've read, it'll probably work, but consider; if one piece breaks off and jams up the shift forks, isn't it possible for it to happen again?

I'd consider the "warning" you removed a subtle suggestion to get to fixin' it. Not horribly expensive (I think the part is under $40) but the biggest issue is you have to pull the engine and split the case. Not the easiest thing to do on this bike (like falling off or having fun) but not impossible. The bulk of the problems with this process is having the tools you will need. Most are common, anything else you need you can make. Careful notes, study and pictures will make this process much easier.

+1. Yes, you can ride it. BUT, you now know it has started to break up; and you have no way of knowing or controlling when the next chunk is gonna break off and whether or where it's going to get caught.

It didn't take long between the chunk in the shifter and the total destruction; weeks, maybe. Splitting the case is quite the task. Take your time, follow the guide, be meticulous in organization and you'll only have to do it once.

I can say this: tearing the engine down, fixing the guide, rebuilding it, and having it run again: makes ya feel real good about yourself. Seriously.

when I change mine (twice on two diferent bikes) I found the guid broken in many pieces. The next piece was just waiting for its turn to come out. I would change it as soon as possible.
