Hi, I I am a proud new owner of my first bike a 1982 750 maxim. The concern that i am having is there is slight chain noise. The PO told me that the chain adjuster needed to be reset. I'm an automotive Mechanic so i should be able to do this on my own but I can't seem to find any instructions on doing this. hope some one can help me out.

Your Bike has an Auto-adjusting Tensioner.
    Sometimes it needs encouragement.

    Pull the Spark Plugs
    Pull the Crankshaft Cover
Use a Wrench to turn-over the Engine.

First, turn the Crank two full revolutions Clockwise; coming to a slow stop.
The Chain is prepped to have any slack presented to the Tensioner.

    Quickly, turn the Engine Counter-clockwise.
Moving the slack in the Chain between the Crank Sprocket and Intake Cam Sprocket.
The Tensioner should take-up the Slack.
    You might hear it CLICK.

Note: Make this a 2-Man job. Have somebody Tapping on the end of the Tensioner when the Crank is turned Ant-Clockwise. This helps if the Tensioner needs to be unstuck.

Rick... I just happen to read that section in the factory repair manual over the weekend. That's not exactly how they instruct you to do it.

Maybe your method doesn't involve loosening anything...

Here is a picture of the section (book is brand new I don't want to flatten it on my scanner just yet).

    Bob; There are two types of cam chain adjusters. What Rick just explained is the method for resetting the automatic type;

the procedure in the manual you are referring to pertains to the manual type.

The automatic cam chain adjuster does not have the locking bolt/nut protruding from the side, only the manual one. The automatic one needs to be "presented with the slack" as Rick put it.

Well it's a good thing I didn't need to do it at the moment.

I didn't see any procedures for my XJ750J in the supplement part of the manual. GRRRR

That's because the factory considers the "automatic" adjuster to BE automatic; whereas we have developed a little procedure to "trick it" into working better yet.

If someone has some pictures of a Manual Adjuster and/or an automatic one that would be great. I'm still not sure that mine is automatic as it has a bolt on the end.

Sure. May as well post the whole thing so Bob doesn't have to mash his new book. Rick already posted the method for the automatic one, above.

    MANUAL CAM CHAIN ADJUSTMENT

Step 1: Remove LH crancase end cover ("timing cover.")

Look closely at the picture for step 3. The "automatic" tensioner DOES NOT have the bolt and locknut protruding from the side; it's smooth and has a hex bolt head on the very tip/end.

I paid good money for NOS owners manual and factory book! No grease spots YET...

IS that scan out of aftermarket book? Looks clearer...

It's from the factory 550 book. Which has a lot of pics from the original XJ400 book, so they're "closer" to the source.
