I went ahead and tackled the muffler job today. Over all it wasn't to hard but certainly time consuming by myself.

I took the entire exhaust off then realized I hadn't even really figured where I was gonna make the cut. So, back on they went! Everybody knows you can do the Sportster muffler swap and those who do it post about it. But... no one ever gives the details of where to make the cut so I was kinda in the dark. I tried to measure a few diff ways to find the best place to cut it. First, I went ahead and cut of the tabs and removed the small heat shield off the collector. I ended up cutting the stock mufflers off aft of the weld, behind the the flange, right where the can begins to open up. I did not have a conventional grinder w/ cut-off wheel so I had to use the Dremel you see in the pic. Surprisingly, it worked very well.

Once I had the big 'ol cans off, I found that there was an inner pipe, 5" or so welded to the collector, that fed the exhaust into the cans. These inner pipes might be an inch and a 1/2 in diameter. They fit in to my new mufflers so I didn't mess with them.

The smaller pipes are far to small to clamp the 1.75" mufflers to so I was at a stand still. Tried to get some sort of coupling from advance auto, that was a no-go. I was at a friends garage 15min from home and needed to secure them somehow. I resorted to drilling through both the new mufflers flange and those little pipes that now run into the new setup and simply running a bolt all the way through. I ran out of time at that point so I rode home and that is how it sits.

I'd love to hear how you other guys did this mod or any idea anyone might have! I did not get to make any mounting straps yet either. Clearly my bolt on securing is not finish work and no way seals the two together.

My new pipes came with a coupler that is clamped onto the muffler.

I welded on the coupler that goes inside the muffler to the original system.
Technically, mine are slip ons now.

On a side note, I did fire her up for a few seconds with just the headers on. WOW, did it sound MEAN!!! I don't see how those guys ride like that. I did make note of it in case I ever wanted to enter a loud pipes contest. I've seen a few at some rallies in the past, its certainly got a chance, ha

Also, I forgot to mention the exhaust parts number I found on the new mufflers. Now, I'm not familiar with HD parts or how they number them but the stamping on the new mufflers say "the exhaust 65657-87A meets specs for HAR FXR 1340...yadda yadda and so on".

I googled the parts number and it comes up Super Glide. FXR 1340 comes back the same way. The guy said they came off a Sportster so I don't know what to think. Maybe they are just the standard mufflers and are just coded that way? I don't know...

FXR is a Super Glide with a 1340cc engine. XL is the sportster code and they are 1200cc engines.

Well there can't be to much of a difference between these and sporty mufflers... They've got the same shape, they are baffled, gave similar results to how others described.

my man, I though about calling you yesterday! yes the both have an adjustable T-bolt brackets. The brackets are off set on each mufflers so they were clearly meant to be stacked on one side. What are you thinking?

Oops, I bet you can still make them work.

that hole for the passenger peg would be one end and the t-slot would be the other but that puts one muffler upside down from original, is one nice and clean on the bottom? other than that you start with a big piece of metal and take away anything that doesn't look like a bracket

They are both like brand new, spotless. One is upside down but you can't really tell. The brackets are about 5 inches long to allow the T-bolt to slide as needed. I mounted them with the slide brackets facing inward. I think I'm gonna have to pull the collector and mufflers and take them to a shop and have something fabbed. I'd like to keep them "slip on" just for the convenience.

you could cut extra slots into the collar of the muffler so there will be 4 slots perpendicular to the collar then use an exhaust clamp. tighten the holey ba-jesus out of it till the muffler has been clamped into the collector. then just finish up the rear brackets so they are solid

    Hi Guys,

I bough "sporty" shorties on ebay, ground the brackets off, unwelded the brackets from my old ones, re-welded them on the new mufflers, and they "bolted" on.

Actually, my welding guy did the work, but I showed him a pic of a prev install after he said it wouldn't work, and they are now on the bike and look factory.

    Regards,

    PY
