To answer my own question... NO. Simply loosen all six nuts/bolt/screw (3 per side). Remove the front one. Remove the shock nuts and the funky washer. Gently wiggle the grab bars off the shock studs. Remove the rear bolts and take the hole assembly off. Reinstall you nuts/bolts/screws so you don't lose them!!! This was easier than I expected. To bad I had to waste a day because I didn't have an 18 socket.

Can I simply wiggle off the rear aluminum grab bars if I remove the 2 bolts each and LOOSEN the upper rear shock bolts?

Or do I have to actually take the rear shock bolts all the way out?

EDIT: The rear center part of the grab bar assembly is already off from a different project/setup.

Re: 82 XJ750 Maxim - Is it this easy to slip off rear grab bars?

i can't understand how you have been working on that bike all these months and never had those bars off yet.
it's 3 pieces the grab bar behind the seat is bolted to them too.
    amazing !

I never had a reason/need to take them off. I did take off the rear handle part last year though.

And you didn't answer the question. :p

Re: 82 XJ750 Maxim - Is it this easy to slip off rear grab bars?

FYI: This was a serious question about removing the grab rails.

I'm working on multiple projects on the rear end and wanted to refinish & repaint the aluminum grab rails to match my side covers and eventually other aluminum parts.

A - Finishing install of different luggage rack/backrest
A1 - Remount trunk onto the rack after making some adapters
B - Rewire trunk from a 3 pin quick connector to a 9 pin (Ground, Brake, Running, Left Blink, Right Blink, 4 speaker wires).
B1 - Install speakers into my saddlebags and run wires from trunk down to bags once all the parts arrive.
    B2 - Repaint speaker grilles.
C - Install a different set of saddlebag mounting brackets that are less bent and fit better over all with the 2nd luggage rack.
C1 - Strip and paint brackets and reassemble lock mechanisms
C2 - Make and paint offset spacers for the brackets using 1" square tubing
D - Mount my DOT LED turn signals onto the saddle bag brackets
D1 - Swap out front signal bulbs for the LED bulbs I have
D2 - Swap out and figure out wiring for my LED flasher unit
E - Refinish right side cover to match the left one I did today
E1 - Refinish aluminum grab bars
E2 - Reinstall center rear grab bar onto aluminum bars

As you can see I have a lot planned for the rear end before the end of the month.

I'm waiting for most of the paint to dry/cure and dry weather.

At the moment I have no saddlebag brackets installed and the rear signals install back to their stock location for now.

Yes, you need to remove the shock bolts to remove the grab bar. It's easy to do, just do one side at a time. After you remove the first bolt, lift the rail a bit and stick the bolt back into the shock and then do the other side.

start at the front, put you finger on it and slowly move it towards the rear, when you pass a fastener stop mark that spot remove the fastener, go back to your mark and continue farther back, repeat till you come to the end.
bolts have external threads, nuts have internal threads, i think you'll find the shocks attached with nuts

Well, from your photo of your bike in your gallery, I can see just by looking that when the nut is off the top shock-mount then the grab rail should come off without having to pull the shock off the stub...

Just undo it and see what happens. Whilst the grab rail is off, and with all those LEDs you have planned, you might want to fit a top-box for a giant battery?

in the back there should be some big thick washer/spacers that go between the rail and the frame, don't loose them, when you put it back on, leave the rails loose till you tighten the grab bar then tighten the rails, keeps everything even
    smartass........lol :)

So much for taking off one of the side rails today before work...

Apparently I need an 18 socket to remove the shock NUT. I have 17 and 19 Deep. No 18. WTF

I just got back from a Farm Fleet store... GRRRR

Hey anyone know how to tell if a parts bike's rear OEM shocks are "better" than your OEMs other than testing them out on the road?

Er... just a thought - COMPARE them.

Seriously though, choose the ones with the best DAMPING performance. Springs are likely to be same.

Not to hard to tell if you take the springs off but that can be tricky

Thanks for the tips and wise cracks before I actually had a chance to try it on my own. Darn work and weather!
