Okay guys, this is not a joke - no innuendo here. I came out to get on my bike today and noticed an oily, creamy-looking residue all over the front of the petcock and a little on the gas line and vac line where they connect. It seems to have no odor. Does anyone know what the heck this stuff is?

    Dried-up Diet Coke?

Moisten a Swap and wipe the stains off the Lever and Chrome.
Cut the Swab off and put into a flip-top plastic vial.
    Seal it.
Send it up to the Lab and have Trace run it through the Atomic Spectrometer.

Have them run a DNA Test on it too.
    Might be Harley-Boy Urine.
Probably not in the system, though!

Who rebuilt the petcock? It looks like dissolved lubricant or grease of some sort oozing out of the seal around the selector valve.

Either that or your tank was coated at some point with something that's dissolving; have you dumped anything in the tank lately, like SeaFoam or anything?

Yes sir, I'd kinda' like to know where this thing has been AND
with whom... Haaaaahhhhhaaaaahh! The floor model is
    TURBO CHARGED.

    Fitz!
Ya' know, You're right on the money!!! It just dawned on me,
The guy I picked this up from had put some "stay alive" type
of additive in the tank. Bet that's what she be...
    Thank ya' sir! 8)

I used to Pimp my 900 for a show and Polish the Petcock with Brasso.
Then, forget to buff it off.
You didn't do something like that; did you?

'Cause there's a bit of it right-smack-dab in the middle of that right-hand Phillips Screw.

(Upon closer examination, ... did you apply a Sealant to the O-ring Seat when you attached the Petcock?)

Sorry guys - just got back to my computer since I posted.

And HAR-HAR (I knew the jokes would be flying)

Fitz and Rick: to my knowledge, the petcock has not been rebuild, perhaps ever. I have not been polishing the bike in any way. I did put an ounce of fuel system cleaner in the tank two fill-ups ago, 1/2 oz in one fill-up ago, but there is none in this current fill-up. I have never seen this before.

The tank also has never been coated with anything - I assume you mean on the inside with a product like Kreem. I have been thinking of using Kreem on the tank, however, but that's another thread.

Just to note - when I left work yesterday, the bike had been parked in the sun. When I inspected the bike before heading home, it appeared that the substance had evaporated or heated up and dripped away - couldn't see it anywhere.

I think maybe it dissolved something, which oozed out; the direct sunshine may have helped.

At the very least I would pull the petcock, disassemble, clean and inspect it; and if you don't currently have an inline fuel filter I highly recommend installing one immediately.

Sounds like a petcock rebuild may be a good idea. I do have an inline fuel filter. Will check in after the work.

I'd treat it with Windex and a Toothbrush.
    Clean it off.
    Maybe some Mother's.
    Shine it up.

See if it comes back before you do anything.
    Maybe it's just, ... fine.
Some Yama-phobic jerk spit on it.
