In preparation of some long distance riding, I was wondering if anyone has purchased or fabricated some sort of long range tanks for their XJ. I was thinking maybe stowing some 1 gallon jerry cans in the bottom of my saddle bags with fuel lines running from them into the main line coming from the petcock but I'm not sure if there would be enough vacuum suction to draw the fuel all the way from the saddle bags. Any thoughts?

Seeing as the main tank is gravity fed, I doubt there would be enough suction to lift fuel from the seat, let alone some low saddle bags.

Without welding together some sort of sit on top contraption with tanks that straddle the main tank and tee in, or some kind of electronic pump system, I think strapping on a hard metal gas can for refills or using some sort of backpack would be your best/safest bet.

+1 there is no siphon effect due to the cap vent.
You can fill old oil bottles (3 or 4) as an emergency reserve that you manually fill, to give extra range or security.

An automatic system needs a secure tank, a vent, a pump, and getting fancy, a filter, a "tank-to-tank" vent, and an overflow drain tube. And a tipover engine cut-out switch.

Good call, thanks guys. I guess I'll just carry the 2 jerry cans with me and fill up as I need to...

On the XS11 boards I saw a guy rig up a contraption one time. He had a tank mounted like rear luggage with a pump and marine fittings, run to a switch on the handlebars. Though I would agree about the "best" solution being just to keep spare bottles and manually fill on the side of the road.

I thought about it before too, but ended up with the same conclusion.

Do you really want to go 100 miles on your bike without even a short stop to fill up your tank from a can you have on the back?

Save your time and money and do it the old fashioned way....running out of gas in the middle of nowhere and hitchhiking to the next fuel station!

Haha, ya I'm thinking about doing the Dempster Highway up past the arctic circle, even hitch-hiking isn't plausible lol.

No mention of Tour Tank? Y'all are slipping. ;)

(No, I don't have one. No, I don't know how they work.)

    Or this:

A custom fiberglass tank. I could not get the pics to load but I beleive he cut the sides off the tank and made fiberglass extentions to replace them.
Lots of work, I'm not sure if I could rely on it. I would just carry a couple gallons in a can on the bike somewhere.
