Im looking for a mph and rpm gauge for the maxim 650. Does anyone know where I can buy this? Also are there by chance any different looking gauges that fit the maxim? Im interested in making my 'own' maxim.

We were just discussing it here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=32000.html

Do a forum search on "gauges" or "what gauges fit" to find some more ideas.

Which Maxim 650? They changed from a mechanical to an electronic tach along the way; do you know what you have?

With an electonic or mechanical tach? That's what I was asking, not if you knew what bike you have.

Put it in your sig; makes life easier.

Not sure if it would fit but I have a working speedometer and tach from an 1980 xj650 on ebay right now. I set the shipping to high though. They are in rough shape but work. Some paint over spray and the crome on it isn't in good shape. They might clean up ok. I would be willing to send them your way for $25. Just let me know at the momment they have a day left starting bid at $15, and shipping $15. If you are interested let me know. Oh and $25 would include shipping. They aren't pretty but I do not think you can find them for a better price.

Ah just read your last post. If you are looking for better than new my speedo isnt for you. I though you were looking for a cheap working speedo.

Im going to hold off on any decsions for right now but my gauges both don't work now so I might want to buy yours in the future if you'll still have them. Also bigfitz52 I looked at your link and while im not thrilled about the look would this

work on my bike. Im still looking around if anybody wants to throw in a gauge idea.

I do like some of those Hasersys, thanks. 2 more questions now. Does anyone know if it would it be possible to mount just a speed gauge by itself? Also Does anyone know of a good gas gauge for my bike. Maxim rules.

The mechanical tach will have a cable that runs to the front of the motor, on the upper right front of the head.

An electric will have a wire running to the spark plug wire, most likely the #2 plug wire.

It is possible to use any gauge you wish (of the same mech/elec type) but you may have to fab a bracket to mount it.

Fuel gauge someone else will have to answer for ya.

If it dosen't have a fuel gauge then I doubt it is worth doing. Unless I am wrong I do not know of any aftermarcket fuel sending units to hook to a bike. If you have one and it is just not hooked up or is broken thats a different story.

I'm sorry, but the electronic tach gets it's signal from the line running from the TCI. I can just imagine what the circuitry to try and take a lost-spark ignition pulse would look like. Yikes!

If your speedo isn't working maybe it is just the cable?

I figuered out why it wasnt working. When I wrecked the cable on the back side of the speedometer came off. However I still want to re-invent my maxim, so last question and I'll stop bothering you guys. My gauge looks like crap now and I want this gauge

Could you explain the ''won't be a direct "bolt on" wiring-wise'' part? I know nothing about bike wiring, so should I even try this by myself?

I believe he is saying it will not just bolt onto the xj if it is an after market part. You will have to make, or buy a way to mount it your self. It will not just mount where the old one was at if it were not specifically made for the bike.
