Could someone advise me as to where the side kickstand mounts on a 81 XJ650 Maxim? Took a look at my other bikes kickstands to get an Idea and couldn't find a similar mounting place on the Maxim

My first thought is what is keeping the bike up now? There should be a tab welded to the frame on the left side or a spot where it was welded. Might be broken off or the PO removed it.

Assuming it is a stock application and not a custom frame or lowered then this will show you the stock means of mounting it on the frame (see the tab welded on)

haha, Its on the center stand now but its kind of a pain, I guess the tab was removed cause there was not one there when i checked, that is the exact area i was looking where it is in that diagram, anyone know how i would go about getting that piece and getting it welded on, local bike shop I've been using might do it, I'll check monday and see if they have it and will weld it.

You can also get a bolt on style.
Just would want to see if the seller can give you a length

I would double check the frame and engine clearance before getting a bolt on kickstand, there might not be enough room to get it in there.

Local shop won't have the actual piece, it was part of the frame before somebody lopped it off.

Your best bet is going to be to find another XJ650 to look at, and get a similar piece fabbed up and then welded on. If it's like the 550 and 650 Secas, it's a pretty substantial hunk of metal.

you might have to go to a bike boneyard get the whole stand and peice. I really dont think your local bike shop will weld it but maybe they do not like the liability of welding on a frame but a welding shop can do it for sure. Wish i still had it but gave it away viragos bolt on the bracket that is and the kickstand is really close to the same a little grinding and welding and you are done. Might be an alternative if you cant find a frame to hack it off of

I'm getting ready to weld mine onto 86 xj700 x maxim with cooling tubing inside the frame. mines been that way for 2+years due to being worried about welding in small tight area and welding so close to cooling system tubing. only doing it know as i'm pulling engine on wednesday and lots of room to weld back on. Hope yurs isnt water cooled.

Cooling shouldnt matter its not even close to the lines might be a little close to the exhaust but thats it. There is no cooling lines or coolant within 2 feet and no coolant in the frame

I've got a 81 Virago parts bike with a good kickstand on it, I might see if I can get the mount and everything off and on the maxim if it sounds like a good idea, pretty sure my exhaust would be in the way for one of those bolt on kickstands

If the parts bike is "sacrifice-able" enough, how about cut the whole section of frame out with the mount on it, and take it to a pro to section in; or have a fab shop "duplicate" the tab? You'll see what I mean when you take a good look at the one on the Virago.
