Have a 85 750 Maxim X. Have just had the carbs cleaned and rebuilt with new floats and gaskets; however, I have just found out that I now need a "Starter Set". Unfortunately that part or set has been discontinued.

Does anyone have suggestions as to where I could get these parts, or what I could do to get the carbs back into good condition?

    Thanks

What the heck is a "Starter Set" and which mechanic ripped you off and is wanting more money? Did you by the blinker fluid yet? :)

I'm not sure what you mean by a starter set unless you are talking about a starter specifically. Is it possible you are referring to something else that is called a different name here in the US? A starter has nothing to do with the carbs.
I will heartily recommend you contact our resident parts guru, Chacal, for any and all of your parts needs. He will know what you need and can get it to you inexpensively.
You will find him under his own banner here on the forum. Just look in the Supporting Vendor forum.
    Good Luck!

So, is the bike running or not? Add your location and as much info as you feel comfortable sharing in your next post, you may be living just down the road from someone that can help. Plus posting pics is a big plus when it comes to sorting stuff out, like do you have a picture from an owners manual that shows this "Starter Set".
I've had my 750 MaximX since day 1 so I'm assuming that you have the "Canadian Edition Eh"!
Tell us where this "Starter Set" is suppossed to go on the bike and tell us who the mechanic is and his shop name and email address so that we can gang up on him!
Oh, and welcome to best site for anything XJ on this or any other Continent. Advice, comraderie, parts (Chacal) and the occasional dose of bullsh*t.

    Cheers, Graham

The Starter set is Yamaha part number 49A-1410A-00-00. It is essentually a plunger and small gaskets in each carb. I'm not sure what they do, but they are leaking and allowing gas on top of the diaphrams in the carbs.

The overall problem is that the bike runs well when it is cold, but when it warms up it stalls out.

I live in North Bay Ont. and, yes it is the Canadian edition. I just bought it a few weeks ago and took it to a guy I trust who works on older bikes. he has done the work to rebuild so far but now we are up against the wall for parts.

It is part number 21 in the attached scematic.

    Thanks

    Dave

The starter set is the choke on these CV carbs, they go by several different names. They are getting hard to find. MikesXS.com has some for the XS650 Yamahas, some of them are interchangeable with the XJ's. I did find some that fit my XJ11 with some modification to the ends. A easier thing is to replace the washer in the end. I ordered some Viton sheet from McMaster Carr and made some new ones.

    mlew, Thanks

If I understand you corectlly, I may be able to fabricate the washer myself with the right material. Is that a simle process? how?

    Thanks

Here you go. In my manual it is descrbed as the starter plunger assembly.
