I was wondering if anyone has an oil cooler similar to this one: (this is the plate that goes behind the oil filter)

I am trying to find the correct o-ring for it in order to stop my leak. I tried the same one that the oil filter cover uses and that was not a good fit. I would appreciate any help.

Chacal stated: Okay, that looks to be the oil cooler adapter plate from a Lockhart brand cooler system, they were (are?) popular mfgs. of aftermarket oil coolers (you can find them for sale on eBay occassionly).
Unfortunately I don't have the o-ring between the cooler adapter plate and the engine block, or the mounting bolt, because I don't know what size it is.......I've never had oneof their coolers to inspect.

    Thank you.

The local auto parts should have a variety of o-rings
    that may work.

Is the adapter to engine grooved for an "O" ring
or is it face to face for an composite gasket? It
may just be the "O" ring, (If that's the case),
Between the adapter flange and engine is gonna
need to be a bigger cross section..? V-70 to V-90?
Like it's already been said, Shouldn't be all that
hard to find the right "O" ring for 'er. I'd sure
take the adapter along with me tho. .02

I've got one of those units if you need a specimen Chacal!
I'll need to pull it out to see if the stock o-ring will work. Class tomorrow and Wednesday with plans on Tuesday. I'll see what I can do later this week.

I went to all kinds of stores to find the ring this morning. (Auto parts, Hradware, plumbing supply). They all pretty much laughed at me. Any ideas? I am going to try a polarus dealer later, then look through all the different FRAM 6000 series oil filters and see if one has an o-ring thats a better match than the one in the 6003. I hate to ask, but will RTV silcon work here?

    I would get a correct o-ring.

Did you try Ace/True Value Hardware. I've found many o-rings there that were not available elsewhere.

I tried the local hardware store that was suppossed to have the most o-rings. I went to a true-value that was no longer a true value. I sent a message to the parts department of the local yamaha dealer. I will try another tru value or ace store. I am still going to the polaris dealer and checking the different oil filters. Thanks everyone.

Give McMaster-Carr a shot. They have all kinds of O-rings available and some very informative charts to help guide you in your selection. You can also give them a call/email them for additional assistance.
    Good Luck!

It took a little web-fu but looky what I found: Lockhart is (sorta) still around! http://www.lockhartphillipsusa.com/

And while they don't appear to make oil cooler kits for the XJs any more, maybe they will bless you with a size or a part number for the o-ring.

I went to that site, Fitz ...
    I downloaded the latest catalog.

    There's no Coolers anymore.
But, they got Gizmo's galore and tons of SportBike Racing Parts.

The Yamaha Oil Filter Adapter and Securing Nut would make a better fit.
The Cooler Plate and its Threaded ID Fastener are the same across the line.

You need the Hose Ends that Bolt to the Adapter.
Armed with that much, ... lines and a Cooler wont be hard to come by.

Thank you everyone. I am going to look into all of those. I had no luck yesterday afternoon either. Even my local yamaha dealer couldn't find anything. He took a measurement and its estimated that the o-ring is 86mm in diameter and 3mm thickness.

I am going to call an Ace and True Value today with those measurements and see if they have anything close. If not, I am going to put it back together as is for now and if the leak is minimal, I will live with it for the time being. If I cant get the leak back to minimal, I will disconnect the cooler plate and run it without the cooler for now. (I will do these things while waiting for the fix). I am worried about running it without the cooler since the bike is bobbed and I don't have any of the "idiot" lights to warn me of an issue. I also don't know if the oil cooler was added as a precaution or if the bike was running hot and needed it.

I was wondering if I could use the standard yamaha cooler plate or another with my current oil cooler? It doesn't seem like changing the plate and leaving the old cooler should be an issue.

The Yamaha Cooler Plate has a unique Inlet and Outlet design.
To use a Yamaha Oil Filter Adapter, ... you will need the Hose Connections.

The Yamaha Hose Connections are "Flat -to- Flat" with O-rings as Gaskets.
You need to be able to mount Hoses to the Adapter; so you'll require a YAM Adapter and a Pair of Hose-ends.

I am going to place a small amount of oil resistant RTV silcon on my old o-ring. This should in theory make it work like a new o-ring. This silicon is meant for oil pans, so I am confident with this application. I am thinking that I may need to do this every time I change the oil filter since the cooler plate is held in place by the oil filter cover and bolt.

That fixed it. Not even the tiniest drip anymore! I rubbed the thinest layer of RTV oil resistant silicon on both sides of the o-ring. am glad I didn't have to unhook the oil filter. If anyone ever finds out what is the correct o-ring and where to get it, please let me know.

The Cooler O-ring is the same as the Filter Dome.

Filter and Bolt O-rings come with Fram Filters.

This one is not. (Its an aftermarket part). I tried it. The filter dome o-ring is thicker. I also searched all over for it. I just deleted the picture for this thread, so you won't be able to see the cooler plate anymore.
