Any chance low fluid level in the battery can make the bike go bang... twice?
Rode off today and the battery warning light came on. Towards the end of the ride, engine periodically died, and gave off two small bangs...

perhaps. Bang like a backfire? I've noticed if I have the bike in gear, coasting, and I kill the ignition via the off-run-off switch, and then turn it back on, it will backfire sometimes. Not twice tho, just once. maybe low juice caused your ignition to cut out?

Pretty sure the ignition cut out due to low fluid level in the battery. After all, the warning light came on... Will refill with distilled water and run it tomorrow...

    After filling the Battery, ...
    Test Charging Function.

    Measure Voltage at Battery Terminals
    Engine running.
    2,750 rpm's or Greater.

    +14.2V -to- 14.5V = Normal ( To 14.8V OK )
    Below 14.2V = Fault
Above 14.8V indicates Charging System Fault

Thanks. So, do the "backfiring" relate to the battery fluid level?

In a way, yes. If the battery is low enough that the ignition is cutting out, and you are still at open throttle when it dies, you are filling the cylinder with fuel that isn't getting ignited. This fuel will empty into the hot exhaust, igniting, causing a backfire.

when i was a kid, we called that "key-banging" :)
ride along with some reasonable revs behind you, kill the ignition but dont shut the throttle down, flick ignition back on and BANG!

great for stirring up those neighbours you dont like, or their cat ;)

If the battery is not holding charge, it is possible that the ignition cut out, although it shouldn't happen above a point where the charging system is working (above fast idle). If the battery is holding charge but the level is low (warning light on) it should not cause any problems.

Thanks tskaz, our local reasoning came to the same conclusion you did ;)

I guess the warning light came on at the point when fluid level was just level with the sensor... Then, when the levels dropped just below the sensor, the ignition started to cut out....

I dunno about that. After filling up with demineralized water, the bike runs juuuuust sweet
