Ok so I resync'd my carbs with the YICS tool, followed by some colourtuning. Here is what I did for that. I would turn out the screw. Still blue flame. Rev the engine abit and would see some orange. Turn screw in rev again. I did all four till I had very little orange left on each when I would rev. Was that the correct way? First time I ever colourtuned. I left the YICS in while I did it.

Just back from a quick ride. Bike runs great. Seems to run cooler than before I did a resync.

You're right in the ballpark; keep an eye on your plugs and ride it.

Since the factory specified doing the mixture adjustments with an EGA with the YICS blocked, and ColorTuning is our "substitute" for the EGA, ya done good.

YAY that would explain why it runs cooler and smoother than after the shop tuned it without the YICS and no colortune.

EGA stands for Exhaust Gas Analyzer

The YAMAHA (E)xhaust (G)as (A)nalyzer's are rarely used anymore.

1.) Because they broke-down and were inaccurate ... or just died.
2.) The Plugs on the base of the Header Pipes are usually seized worse than Intake Manifold Bolts.

What some places do is place a Probe into the Exhaust Pipe and TWEAK the Screws.
But the Probe see the Exhaust from two cylinders blended in the collector.

ColorTuning with the YICS Passage blocked will give you a Precise Mixture for IDLE.

    BLUE = Perfect Idle Mixture.

You may NEED to add some richness to eliminate a slight hesitation transitioning off-idle.
    Not very much.
    Maybe 3 to 5 Degrees.

But, enough to enrich the ColorTune L@@K from Blue to just off the Blue.

The shop did it right for a normal bike. Their work is great. But these xj's are a little differant. I know he didn't have it correct because he doesn't have the knowledge about these bikes. I paid gladly because through them I found out my problems. It was worth the $100 for towing and tuning. I found colourtuning a little tricky. I still wonder if I have it just right. I will probably do it again just to make sure.

I'm happy to know you got Service in which you have trust and confidence.

You should still get your hands on a Manual and become familiar with Owner's prescribed maintenance procedures.

You should be prepared to perform some tasks you need to do in an emergency.

Knowing how to take a Wheel off the Front and Rear for instance.
It's easier on the wallet to bring-in the Wheel when you need a Tire; than have the Bike towed if you get a flat.
