SO my 82 XJ550 wont start... Just got a new start/kill switch for it. My connector was all coroded so i had to use regular conectors for the wires... Do the wires match on color?!?! Meaning, does the blue/white go to blue/white and the red/white o to the red/white? i was looking at the wiring diagrams and it looks like the blue/white is supposed to go to one of the red/white?!?!?! ALso, when I turn the key on, i hear a solenoid kick on under the seat. it had a blue/white, black, black/white and red/white wires going to it.. also clicks when i touch the kickstand switch... Any help would be great. thakns!

You need: A factory book. PM me with your email address and I'll send you the starting safety circuit diagnostic page.

THIS: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=27543.html will give you some immediate answers.

"clicks when I touch the sidestand switch..." This is your main clue. The relay you're hearing click is likely the sidestand switch relay; your sidestand switch is probably flaky. If it's "open" when it's not supposed to be, the bike won't run. Read the section on testing the switch and on identifying the relay in the link I just posted.

You may need to dismount the sidestand switch, and carefully flush it out with contact cleaner while operating the plunger. If the rubber boot is split, it's going to continue to act up despite regular cleaning once it gets any dirt/moisture in it. If that's the case, replace it.

NOTE*** I DO NOT RECOMMEND bypassing or eliminating the sidestand switch on these bikes. The geometry of the sidestand is such that if left down, it can and will lever the bike off the ground and wreck you the first time you turn left. It won't necessarily just kick up, trust me.

My kickstand switch is already bypassed. it was acting up when i picked up the bike so i did it when I got home. Every bike I have ever had i have bypassed so I am in the habit of always putting the stand up. The wires are saldered together and insulated... I wish I could locate a wiring diagram of the ignition/stater system. I think I could probably figure it out then... I am probably selling the bike once properly repaired so i really dont want to spend the money on a book..

Get a factory book. Everything you need and much more is in there.

? if you already bypassed the kickstand switch how is it that now when you touch the switch the relay clicks?

Sorry, I was touching the wires for the kickstand switch. SOmehow they were not as "sauldered" as I thought. LOL I fixed that. I actually got it to start. After taking apart the main harness partially, i found a brake in the blue/white wire that is coming form the start button.

So...you're going to "repair" the bike without a manual, bypass the safety switches, and then sell it, huh?

    Awesome...

When and if I sell it, I will put the switch back in. Right now I just want it ridable. Besides, the new owner will be notified or any repairs or modifications before he buys it.
