Just did a full engine rebuild. Have only run the bike for about 10-20 minutes (total, in spurts, trying to get it running right) on the center stand.

Pulled the valve cover off to check the valves now that everything's more settled in place and noticed a fairly strong gasoline smell from the valve cover. Definitely sure that it's from under the cover itself and not elsewhere on the bike, because if I stick my nose in where the spark plugs are (between the cams) it smells neutral, but if I smell the cams, it's definitely gasoline.

Could this just be things settling in and it might go away after I put a hundred miles or so on the engine? Do I have a very serious problem?

Check your oil level and see if gas has gotten into the crankcase from carbs over flowing

this may well have been the case. I know I left it sit on prime overnight at one point and bowl did overflow. I tested all the floats and they do close off properly in a "running" condition but I think one has a very slow leak, what with the whole weight of the gas in the tank pressing on it.

Also, when I first ran the bike, I had the air jets in the carbs backwards and it was running way, way rich.. enough to foul the plug almost instantaneously... so a good amount of fuel may have blown past the cylinders there, as well.

Now that things are more situated, just going to change the oil and hope for the best :)
