Alright so im a skateboarder, i own a yamaha maxim xj650 from 82. While skating today my keys fell out of my pocket and a crackhead grabbed them off the floor and ran away with them. My bike originally had no weather caps on them and the key was from a motorhome blank. what would everyone suggest for me to do? can i avoid a 160 dollar charge? Also would i maybe be able to just swap out the ignition?

one major problem is also i had just gotten a new gas cap from a junkyard so the key for gas and ignition are different.

i know its a very dumb situation but if anyone has some knowledgable words i would appreciate it because i am broke as a joke tryin to pay for college.

    thanks fellow bikers

    cheers

When I bought my bike, it had no keys. I took off the ignition (I had never worked on a bike in my life) with no problems, took the ignition to the locksmith and they made me 2 new keys for $40. I don't know what to tell ya about the gas tank...

Well, the locksmith can make a key for the ignition no problem. Take the ignition in to him, they will pull a code and cut you your key. My locksmith charges $16 for two keys and to read the code.

The gas tank? you may have to take ithe tank to them. They may be able to pick it and get a code from it, but I'm not sure.

If nothing else? they can make one for you, the bad part is that it isn't cheap. Last key I had made cost me $60

Tank isn't a big deal...... This sounds a whole lot worse than it really is-- Drill the center of the key hole out. Get down far enough that you can turn the bottom of the key cylinder with a screwdriver. Open the cap, take out the single bolt that holds it in place. Then either take another one a replace it, or take it to the locksmith and see what he can do for you.

I've only drilled out about half a dozen now................

last night i actually realized my bike can be started with a knife, i have a strong feelings that the original owner had drilled out the center as well. What type of bit would i need?

Just a thought: typically the ignition and gas cap keys are the same, yes? Perhaps one could pull the ignition module, get the code off the back, and use that to create a key. That would let one get into the tank, at least.
