So I've decided it's time that the carbs come off this '81 XJ650LH. Got them apart (not off the rack), bowls and floats apart. Hats are off #1,#3,#4. On carb #2, two of the screws are stripped. One is a little worn, the other, don't think I'll be able to get it out. How would you guys go about removing this screw? By the way, it's the flat head part that is stripping, not the philips head.

Get on it sideways with a 10" Vice Grip. You can actually crush the screw head - the metal is that soft.

Go to any hardware store and get (order) stainless allen cap screws (metric) and a jar of Anti-Seize.

Perfect answer. If you dont have vice grips but have a vice, clamp the screw head in the vice and turn the carb to undo.

I actually got em out with some pb blaster, and then used a rubber band for some extra grip. I do plan on ordering all new screws, as well as at least one float bowl gasket that I ripped apart while trying to get it off the carb body. Thanks for the tip though, I'm sure that method works like a charm since these screws are so damn soft like you said (if they weren't I wouldn'tve had this problem in the first place lol). Again thanks for the input

My preferred way.....using small drill bits in increasing size, drill it out stopping just at the thread inside diameter. Clean and re-chase the threads, replace the screw.

I just use a dremel to make a deeper slot to get more bite with the flat-head bit. A little PB or Kroil doesn't hurt either...

+1 on the stainless socket-head replacements.

Dropping $20 on a set of easy outs doesn't hurt either.

+1 on the allen heads and anti-sieze. You should be putting anti-sieze on any screw/bolt that doesn't get thread locker. It should become your best friend.... and you'll be thankful you spent the extra minute when those screws come right out 5+ years from now.....

Id also suggest an impact driver. I never could have gotten my carbs apart to clean them without one!

    Carb HAT Screws?

If the Crosses are buggered and a Screwdriver don't work, ...

    I grab them with Needle-nosed Vice-Grips.
(Sometimes I grab them with the Needle-nosed Vice-Grips and it resists.
That's when I grab it TIGHT with the Needle-Vice-Grips and smack the Needles with a Hammer Handle).

Throw-away any Fastener less than PERFECT.
    If you rehabbing Carbs, ...
Do the Stainless Kit from chacal.
