just took a peak inside my tank, looks like i got some rust.

ive been looking through all the options i have, one i became pretty interested in because i do not know how it even works is Metal Rescue.

i dont want to waste my money on something that does not work, nor do i want to use a product wrong and mess up my tank even more.

any suggestions would be awesome, i am completely new to this and just dont want the rust getting to my engine.

    - cheers

I'd say as long as it contains phosphoric acid, it should work. I've tried soaking my crash bars that had some rust on them in a phosphoric acid bath for about 15 minutes, and when I pulled them out and rinsed them off, the rust was pretty much all gone.

I can't see why it wouldn't work inside a gas tank, pour some in along with a few chain links or BB's or something and shake it around for about 15 minutes.

Most chemical rust removers are phosphoric acid based, and they should all work the same, but I don't know about "Metal Rescue" since they say it's non-acid based and won't tell you what's in it.

There's a variety of methods ... I'm pretty impressed with the videos and information I found here ...

They have a reasonably priced kit and it looks like a good system to me, there are bound to be others.

I used phosphoric acid to clean tank, then acetone the tank and right after it is rinsed with acetone blow it out. As soon as the air hits it the inside will begin to rust again. I used a product called Kreem.

    Here is the kit

    http://compare.ebay.com/like/2707702971 ... r&_lwgsi=y

It works well if done right. Follow the directions. Take the pet cock off, and get a new gasket, also make some sort of plug to keep the cleaners and sealers in. I did my xj650 tank two years ago and it still is good. It filled in small pin holes in my tank as well.

Be aware that the Methy Ethyl Ketone in some of these kits is nasty stuff and will take the paint off your tank!

I swear by a product called Evaporust it is a non toxic liquid that contains NO acid. But does it ever work! Will not effect anything but the rust. I poured some in my tank when I got it from the PO. Had a small amount of rust in the tank and seam and after about 3 hours poured it out and everything was ready to go. I just rinsed out the tank with a little gas and she was good to go!! look at www.evaporust.com

Oh yeah I have been meaning to say something about Evaporust. I am working on a couple of writeups during which I used it. It's a phenomenal product. Works just as advertised and really cleans up rust. I got it at O'Reilly so I assume you can get it just about any big chain auto store.

Yeah, we can even get it here in Canada. Canadian Tire sells it in 1 liter containers. I try to have at least 3 bottles in the garage all the time.

I,ve used the POR15 tank kit on two tanks now ,and would highly recommend it. Not cheap ,but works really well . They gaurantee the sealer against about any thing you put into your tank (liquid that is )

    cheers, Murray

with evaporust would i have to coat the tank afterward? Would it make sense to use evaporust then the kreem coating?

Well that depends on how bad the rust is. If it is more of a surface rust no. I never coated mine. If the rust has penetrated through the tank or has left the metal very thin, yes then coat. Do not coat if you do not need to.
