Figuring out the rat's nest

So I needed to replace the gauge lights on my XJ650. Doing so required dismounting the gauges from the bike and removing the headlamp.

As a result, I have this rat's nest of cables that all need to be reconnected.

Most of them are quite easy, they have a unique connector and can only connect to one thing.

There are several, though, which are not so. They have one or two holes for a barrel connector surrounded by a rubber sheath. Unfortunately, several of them do not seem to have a connecting wire or pair of wires which match up properly. Somewhere between 3 and 6 of them are the female connector with no male/barrel I can find to stick in them. Then there is this one lone red cable to male/barrel, for which I cannot find a red wire to which to connect it anywhere.

Does someone have a diagram/list of what each of these wires is to connect to, giving color coding and such? I have the Chilton's for the bike, but I don't find anything there that lists our the colors/connections for this rat's nest.

    TIA,

Thanks badfish, but do you have any larger copies? I can give you an email to send them too. Those are too small for me to do anything with.

Ok, so I was able to track down a diagram big enough to read/print and be useable.

I am left with four female connectors with nothing attached to them:

2 are pairs of black wires,
    One blue (L)
    One red

From what I can figure out of the diagram, the red, blue and one of the blacks are to be there but nothing connected to them. Is that correct?

I do not find a second black pair with nothing attached in the schematic. Now, it could simply be a function of the connector to which they are attached to bridge the two wires, but again, why not just use a butt splice unless you want it there in case something need down the road and that provided a connecting point ... Can anyone fill me in or correct me?

The blue connector is used for a headlight bucket 3-watt "parking light" that comes on when the key switch is turned to the "P" (park) position on Euro model bikes.

The red wire.......not sure, perhaps for some accessory device that was never used or only used on some other model, perhaps the XJ650 Police bikes, perhaps the flashing light, loudspeaker, etc......somethng that draws lots of power, since it comes off the main fuse.

The dual blacks..........probably for the blue parking light and the (unknown) red-wire device.

Wiring harnesses are somewhat "generic" within each model line, to accomodate optional accessories in some markets, such as the parking light and maybe some Police equipment (flashing light, siren, etc.) which are not present on all versions of the same basic bike. It's easier to build the main harness with ALL possible features wired in, and then use (or not) the "ports" (terminals/connectors) as required, rather than build "custom" main harnesses for each version of (otherwise) similar bikes.

Sorta like nipples on a male.........no real purpose on some models of the species, but there anyway, a vestigal remnant of the original "master" design....... :D

Thank you for clarifying that. Never was taught to read a schematic and trying to make sense of it ... which connection is supposed to be where physically ... seemed a bit of guesswork to me, but I seemed to have gotten there ...
