Ok, so.... I'm stuck here in Iraq with nothing but time to sit around and think about what I'd like to do to my XJ. I'm thinking I want to hardtail it and if I do I might want to stretch it a bit. I have seen a few people on here that successfully lengthened their drive shafts, but I was wondering if I could just swap out the motor without TOO much trouble. I have two '81 cb motors sitting in my shed. One is a 900f and the other is a 750f.

hhhhhmmmmm... or even a V-Twin engine? have any of you tried anything like this? I did a search, but couldn't find anything. Maybe I just suck at searching. So, help me out and post up pics if you find any.

Why not build 2 projects? Keep going on the XJ and build a custom hardtail frame for one of the CB motors. The guys on the chopper underground have all kinds of cool info on that. Wouldn't you love to build your own frame jig and make a fully custom frame? I know I plan on it. That means more tools and we can never have enough tools. :D

Stretching the shaft is not hard to do... If someone sends me a shaft and housing/swingarm Ill gladly stretch it for free (just pay shipping both ways....)

Once I do one for a proof of concept Ill offer the service for a real reasonable fee. I estimate $150-200.00 for each shaft.

On another forum I saw someone who paid in excess of $1600/ to have a new shaft machined, thats crazy rediculous.

I used to do hybrid engine swaps on import cars which would require a lengthened or shorten axle to mate a Honda trans to Porsche stub axles for example... Basically you are just putting a sleeve around the axle shaft and plug welding it together.

If someone sends me the parts Ill demonstrate....

that IS the plan. I am going to be building the CB and the XJ. I still have a '90 gsxr 1100 that I started parting out too. Instead of finishing it I think I'm using the USD front end and wheels on the hardtailed CB though. Some drag bars, jockey shift.... I think it will look mean as hell.

I responded to your other topic. I wish I could send you mine now. Wish I had someone in NC that could swing by the house to pull it for me and send it to you, but I don't. I won't be home for another 5 months or so for vacation either.
