Okay, this idle problem really has me puzzled. The bike is a real s.o.b. to start when cold. I get it started and let it run at half choke and 2000 rpm for about five minutes then slowely turn choke off and it won't stay running unless I mess with the throttle. After about twenty minutes it will stay running at 1200 rpm until I blip the throttle then it goes to 4500 and stays there. I think one of the slides might be sticking from varnish or crud and its time to rip the carbs apart and clean them good. The spark plugs are a whiteish-tan color but the exhaust smells really rich, kinda burns the nose a little. Does anybody know where I can get a set of carb kits online cheaper than the 24 dollars each the stealership wants and what all comes in the mikuni kits? Off idle the bike runs great and pulls strong, it just won't idle right. Thanks for the help. :?

P.S. USPS blows- 8 days and I still don't have my book from Clymer yet!

oldbikebarn.com has them for $17 a piece. May help your cold starting problem but the high idle can be a result of an air leak or just a need for a carb sync. Check your carb intake boots for cracks bad enough to allow air in. Also check the vacuum nipples on the intakes and make sure they aren't leaking or that one of the caps is missing.

I'll check them out. The carb holders have some surface cracks but I couldn't tell how deep they were so I pulled them and smeared them with high temp silicone for a test but didn't change anything. I do have a new set coming in the mail though. I did a sync yesterday and they were pretty far off, helped a little but not much. Granted it's been 18 years since I worked on mutiple carb engines (2 stroke outboard engines) but I didn't think I forgot that much.
    Thanks :)

Edit-- As I was listening to it run I noticed a very noticable hissing noise, almost like a large vaccume leak that is why I think there might be a sticking slide.

fozziebear, do a search for butterfly shaft seals - there are a lot of threads to this possible problem!

If your sync was off then your mixture screws are most likely off too. A colortune may help quite a bit.

Went out this morning and pulled the carbs and disassembled them. Number one slide had enough varnish on it to keep it from droping smooth, cleaned it and "clunk". The other three were good. I got all four float bowls off without damaging the gaskets, some crud but not as much as I thought there would be and the needles looked like new. What size jets do these have from the factory? Mine are 035, 112.5, and the top one is either 155 or 165, I couldn't tell as the stamping wasn't very clear. The mixture screws were 3.5 turns out on 1, 3, and 4, 3.75 out on 2. Cleaned them up good and put them back on, set the screws at 3 turns out and crossed my fingers. I blocked off the yics, hit the button and it fired up on the fourth crank. Let it warm up, resynced, set the mix- now at just shy of 3 turns and it idle great at 1100, blip the throttle and rpm's come back down like normal. Yes fixed, maybe ?! Took it for a ride,
ran really nice but after about five miles it started stumbling at an idle and now it won't idle at all. When I get my new holders I will go over the sync and mix again and see if that helps. Butterfly seals look like new. Sorry for the long post and thanks.

    He also has the gaskets.

He might have some of the other stuff too.
