Did you happen to notice the date on the original post? This section doesn't see a lot of activity, so it's not unusual to see 2-3 years worth of threads on one page. If the guy still needs help, okay. but if he doesn't reply, that could be the reason. Ride safe!

If he doesn't need help I'd imagine I will this coming winter. I have other issues on my list with my xj but a good carb clean and tune would do her some good this winter I'm sure.

I have owned many Yamaha bikes (XJ650,XJ750,XJ1100, 83 XV700 and 83 Virago 750) and now the 550. I bought it for $500 and a yard cleanup. I recently picked up this 1982 550 SECA with 14K in Portland, OR with an old Oregon plate with tags expired 6 years ago. I suppose it would be appropriate to go through the carbs as I am paticulate when it comes to mechanican. Here is what I have to work with: rusty muffler on the left side eaten all the way through and near the start of the muffler, bad battery, seat "beat", dry-rotted tires. I have installed a gel battery and drained the smelly gas. The tank is clean inside and out . I got a dark yellow gas color with a few drops of oily looking beads in it on carb Number 1 and a little touch of mud when I took the bowl drainplugs all the way out. There was a definate stench to it. I'll run fresh gas and give it a try just for kicks.

No go on the start and was flooding out 3 carbs. I tore it down and jerked the carbs out in 20 minutes flat.

I ain't in OR but. When I bought my XJ it had a new? different set of carbs installed cause it wouldn't tune and run decent. The previous owner had cobbled some kind of a balancing device to isolate the carbs but he couldn't remember for sure what it looked like. Young guy with an older advisor in a church group. I built a device like the one described by a Yamaha shop guy. 2 rods that insert into holes in the side of the head (after plug bolts have been removed) with "O" rings spaced on the rods to stop vacuum "air" flow between the cyls. I offered to build more of them for 25$ apeice but never heard any interest. If you are interested I can measure them up and send you the info. Believe me if you don't isolate the cyl's you won't get a tune at idle.
