    Just saying Hi,

New to the site and happy to see plenty of excellent info within.
Just started a 82 XJ750 project, it shall be interesting.
Cheapo bike, will be going for a total transformation, cafe esk'. Perhaps mono shock mod.

Just need to nail down a few electrical gremlins killing the spark, I suspect weak connections fuse area (replacing with blades) and or possible cutoff relay. More trouble shooting later this week. Cranks when jumped (no spark) dim lights when start button pressed.

Compared to others though this old girl should be a breeze.

    Welcome to the site !!
You already found the weak electricals.
What gas tank are you planning on using ?

    Re: New to site.

I love the look of the Z1100 GPZ tank. But lately I've been thinking about scalloping a CB450/750 tank or a something along the lines of a K100. Still plenty of time to figure it out. But really want it flared out in front to overhang the outboard cylinders a bit, kinda dunstal.

Will have plenty of stock parts to part with.

    Re: New to site.

Well so far the rapid build has been going extremely well. Plenty stripped off, cut, cleaned, added etc etc. Waiting for my tank so I can fab out the rest of the seat/tail.

All the electric gremlins were removed once I pulled the Fuse box and soldered in some atc blade plugs in.

Battery remounted, underhung electrics panel created, new headlight and gauges. bar risers (clubmans en route) and rearset creation has begun.

Although I might hold off on that monoshock and save it for one of the XS project bikes.

And just in case, I'm not going for a show bike, just something keeping in line with the price of the bike and something different. Thinking super low budget unique bike, I'd like to see the whole build cost less than $999 including the bikes initial cost. Sweat and mental jumping jacks are free though.

    Re: New to site.

I could be wrong but that looks like a 750. Check your vin number against what chacal has to verify.

Anyway nice job with what you have done so far.

    Re: New to site.

Short VIN only, no JHY etc etc but starting with the 15R which I think is the designation for the 750!. Nice even better.

    Good catch tcoop.

I had been told it was a 650 and never checked since it hadn't been an issue.

    Re: New to site.

Just a little post work day update.

Really coming along now, fair amount of more glass to lay, and I do need to raise the back up some.

Has anyone had any success in using taller shocks and or lifting bracket. The only thing I suspect an issue is the universal angle, missing chain drive at this moment..

Below is a little vid of rear.

    Re: New to site.

A little back from the dead project update. Got sidetracked by an XS and SR build...

Tank and tail are almost set for the first paint run. Need to decide on rear springs, probably 14" and perhaps track down a Seca rear wheel (anyone want to trade?) to get the stance the way I'd like it to be.

If anyone is looking for some original Maxim parts let me know, would like to clear out some shelving space. Just hit me with a PM, most of the stuff is in PA.

    Re: New to site.

Hey Hollywood, I have the rear wheel from an 82 550 seca with gear. If you wanna come out to Wisconsin to pick it up it is all yours. I really don't have the funds or I would just ship it to ya. Also if you would like for another project I have the engine from said 550. I would possibly be interested in some of those Maxim parts too. nice lookin bike by the way

    Re: New to site.

I'll try to put together a list of what's on the shelf, mostly controls, seat covers, tank, gauges etc etc. I'll check out the 550 wheel to see if it's the same part # as the 750 for easy swap. Would definitely consider trades too. Like to see the stuff in use and not gathering dust.

Oh and since this might be getting a bit more "mod/custom" and not an introduction, Admins feel free to move.

    Re: New to site.

Yeah there would be the problem with the 550 wheel as it sits now it is a chain drive and not shaft.

Got a little done lately, Sportster Showa shocks and mufflers, Started paint, started to fab/sew seat pad (will be snap fastened on), Led taillight in rear tail.

Still looking for 18" wheel since my last purchase fell through.

love the look, can you remind us where that tank came from? i love the way it levels out the angled backbone of the bike! perfect cafe racer stance. the seat pad and transition between tank and rear pod don't look finished though, too much gap or something......

^ Yeah the seat is not finished, just started to do the sewing and padding. However, since I'm going for a vintage Le Mans race look, I will not be streamlining the juncture too much.

The tank came off a Kawi KZ1000 if I remember correctly. It's huge btw, the side shot makes it look smaller than it is!

The tail/tray is hand laid glass molded with a SR500 tank.

by using the tank from the kz, are you able to mount the yamaha petcock to get proper flow/vacuum or did you use what was on the kz? i know a tank change is in my future and i've wondered about how to insure fuel delivery....

Just so you know the tank is not a drop in swap, it requires cutting and fabbing mounts for the tank.

As for the petcock, I used neither the stock XJ nor KZ petcock, I used a spare vacuum yammie one that fit. As far as I know the vacuum feature was mostly an emission feature and by no means a requirement, therefore you could use a standard non vacuum petcock and be fine (just plug the vac line).

Wow, looks fantastic! I definitely like the choice of the kawasaki tank - I think they look perfect on our bikes. Take a look at the thread in my sig for a gpz tank from the same era. :D

Thanks! Actually, your project was what got me looking for Kawi' tanks for this build.

Love the look and the tank channel is big enough to fit the multi tube spine of the 750 Maxim.

Soo wish I had a good report with pictures and all but my wheel and drive unit was stolen by someone at UPS and of course there's ZERO accountability for this and now I'm waiting on a reimbursement for the value.

Which of course is not as easy as finding a clean drive or just wheel.

No cameras in the facility? What a joke! Total BS ! Weeks of getting the run around and worse of all is that they won't talk to me about specifics even though I'm the owner of the items! They only give details to the shipper, how these clowns stay in business I don't know. Letter to regional manager and states Attorney General en route.

I love the the KZ tank on the bike. I was thinking about using a 750 Seca tank on my 650 Maxim. I found a KZ tank on Craigslist but the blow won't sell the tank, he wants the entire bike gone. Well I guess I will keep searching Craigslist or a more costly tank from ebay.

    Spring time Update!
Was sidetracked by an XS build a Board track XS build and Some RD fun...

She's been sitting peacefully in the corner for some time. New wheel and tire waiting to be mounted, rear sets laying in a box close by. I think very soon we'll be seeing some new progress made.

Paint change to be had (white red and black yammie race scheme)
Now just to find a little solid straight time to get some quick work done!
