I just replaced the Flasher Self Cancelling Unit in my '82 SECA 650 last night. You must travel 150ft and 10sec for it to turn the flashers off. It worked last night and twice this morning, but crapped out toward the end of my ride. What could be going on? As far as I am concerned, electricity is black magic.

Connections in the switch or flasher relay wiring; OR (and you'll love this) a problem with the reedswitch that's inside the speedometer. The reedswitch is activated by the spinning magnetic drum and is how the system knows the bike is moving.

But why work momentarily and then crap out same as my old one if the wiring or the reedswitch is the problem?

How do you know for sure it's going to STAY "not working?" Sounds intermittent with a touch of assumption to me.

The turn signal cancelling system is as complex as it is primitive; I'm willing to bet your old self-canceller may be fine also and you've got a wiring problem (or a switch problem, or a flasher relay problem.)

Bigfitz... I'm better w/ computers than cycles... However, w/ PC's... often when there is an issue w/ the electrical a part can run fine for a short period then fail when overloaded... Could this be the same type of issue? Too much of a load, spark-grounded?

Don't feel alone Sobeyar, my 650 Seca does the same thing. Fortunately I'm used to turning the signal off manually because my '08 ZX14 doesn't have self canceling signals. Must be old technology.

*knock wood* The only time mine fails to self-cancel is after an aggressive bike wash or a really good ride in the rain. Any chance it got wet (grasping at straws here)?

Honestly, I kind of wish it didn't have that 'feature.' Many times it'll cancel before I even get to the actual turn, and when I switch to my other bike, I can ride for MILES with the darn flasher still blinking away. I'm a slow learner, I guess.

I am so close to having the bike in perfect working order after 9mos of work, perhaps I am being a bit picky about the small stuff.
