Rear tyre (or tyer?)

    I changed the rear tyre of my 750 maxim J (US) around 400 mls ago, Same make model and size of tyre (Shinko), the old one was a close fit to the swing arm (driveshaft tube), but I only noticed today and after a 200 mile round trip that there was a squeak when moving the bike and when I looked the tyre is not only touching the driveshaft tube but has lost about 3-4 mm from the edge. Could I have missed a spacer/washer on re-assmbley? I can't tell from the parts list if there should be one or not, I thought I would notice a significant drag if the fit was this tight, any ideas anyone?

    What size tyre did you install? Shinko's weren't stock, maybe somebody had already fitted an oversize rear.

    This was an identical replacement for the previous one, 130/90-16, as stock - I checked as the PO had already fitted a non stock 110 front and messed up the handling big time.

    the shinko 712's are a little bit bigger than stock, mine rubbed a little when new as well but self clearanced itself, not ideal by any means but it is the tread that rubs and not the sidewall.

    Yes, but I measured the new tyre and it was exactly the same width as the old one - this is running 5-6mm nearer to the driveshaft and there must be a reason. Its not a badly seated tyre as the wear is continous around the circumfrence, I'm not happy until I'm sure that there wasn't a spacer missed off, can anyone tell me the list of components on the axle, particularly in the final drive where the splines meet?

    Go to bike bandit and look up rear wheel for your bike model and year and it will have a parts fiche you can look at. The only spacer that I can think of is the one in the splines (hole the axle passes thru) it can get knocked out and roll away pretty easily.

    If the bearing spacer, or flange was left out then the the hub would shift causing tire rub. This would only happen if the bearings were removed. Not necessary for a tire change.

    Better pic under the 83 model. Both 82/83 are the same.

    Also check the inside of the final drive for contact with the drive hub.

    I can't see what the problem could be from the diagrams (clearer than the parts fiche I have, thanks) so Its strip down time I think, thanks for all of your input fellas, - watch this space...

    maybe the mfg. changed the tire. don't let it rub it will eat the swingarm
    worst case, a sanding disk on a drill while the tire spins and knock the edge off the tire.
    i never had any problems with kenda tires that size

    ...I measured the new tyre and it was exactly the same width as the old one.
    I would prefer to find out why it suddenly started to contact the swingarm, rather than rip some more tyre off - its already lost 3-4mm.
    I think I had the wheel off again to check the brake shoes after fitting the tyre, so still thinking "lost spacer"

    Thanks, but I don't think the problem is with the tyre... Its a Shinko anyway

    just a tip, whenever you put a wheel back on a bike you should Always spin it to check it spins without resistance. Doesn't matter if you done it a thousand times. Spacers could go on the wrong sides by mistake etc, and just to make sure your bike isn't fighting anything it shouldn't.

    Since tires change profile when they're inflated, did you measure both in the same state, inflated or deflated? without a spare rim you would have had to do that measurement before dismounting the old tire. Is there any wear on the old tire?

    This what I can't figure out... The wheel did spin freely when re-fitted and I checked the gap comparing it to the old tyre, I think I removed it for a brake check a few weeks later and would have noticed if it was binding, the measurements were taken with both the tyres off the rim, it was not touching anywhere before I changed the tyre, I still have the old tyre and there is no edge wear evident. If the weather would give me a break I could pull it apart and find out more but we have horizontal rain at the moment, (just for a change).

    Have you checked for the spacer in the rear differential, it is the only spacer that would cause this problem. The axle runs thru it and it can fall out.

    I've pulled out the wheel, and checked the diagram in the Haynes Manual, There doesn't seem to be anything missing and I can't see a spacer in the diff assembly pic - which one do you mean?
    The only parts the spindle runs through are:
    Swingarm, Washer, Brake plate, Wheel, Final drive unit, Washer, Nut.
    The missing spacer you mention would be the answer I think, if it was around 3-4mm thick?
    I tried to attach a pic of the diagram but computer says no.

    The spacer/flange I mentioned would be part #'s 2&3 in the parts diagram. You will find these inside the wheel behind the drive hub/bearings.

    UPDATE!!!
    I decided go have another look and see if I missed anything...
    I tried re-assembling it and torqued it all up, and WTF! its not binding!
    I've no idea whats happening but its fine now!
    everythings tight and loose where it should be and the tyre is about 5mm from the d/shaft tube, which - allowing for the bit of tyre that wore off - is where it was when I first fitted the thing.
    All the bits are as they where before, and the assembly/tightening sequence was the same.
    I haven't ridden it yet so I'll see tomorrow if it happens again.
