How would you check if your float valves inside the carb are working correctly?

If the carbs aren't overflowing and/or you don't have gas in your oil, chances are they're working correctly.

What's happening that's causing you to wonder about the float needles/valves?

well you would need to drop the carb rack for sure. the needles should 'drop' inside the valve/cylinder. sometimes I seen crud in the needle so bad it doesn't move At All. Winterization stuff does that if the bike isn't flushed out the next season

You check it the same way you check float levels, using fuel and clear tubing. If a float isn't shutting off, or is set too high, doing the "clear tube test" will immediately reveal the problem.

While the checking can be done on the bike (see my most recent response in this thread: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=3 ... rt=30.html) it would be much easier to pull the carbs and do the check off the bike, since you'll need to pull them to adjust or repair them anyway.
