I was wondering if there is a touring seat made by anyone for a Seca. I just got a set of hard bags for my Seca and I want to use it for some long distance rides next summer. Just did 1000 miles in 3 days on my 81 cb750F supersport with a stock seat and at hour 2 in the saddle I was ready to get off the thing and could hardly move. Looking for more comfort using the Seca. My Wife also rode a 750 Maxim on the ride and she would like to nicer seat for her bike. Her rear end just went numb. Anyone make a touring saddle for a 750 midnight maxim. I have a 83 Seca I believe and she has a 83 midnight maxim.

    Thanks

I was thinking something like the latter. More something like a Corbin or I might just send it out to Sergent's and have them re contour the spare seat i have. Would like to just purchase what I want with out all the fuss of sending it in and not being happy with the results. Corbin makes a really nice seat. I have one on my Interceptor and its great. Our bikes are just too old for them to still make seats.

    Sergents does good work.
I believe BigFiitz had them do the seats on his bikes. What about the possibility of picking up a used seat to send of to have done while still being able to keep your seat for riding?

Another possibilty is the inclusion of the gel pad while having the seat done.
I use the gel pad in the truck I drive, and is has made a difference. The old joints just don't absorb the constant shock like they use to!

A site you could check out to geta little understanding about what can be done with seats. DIYMotorcyleseat.com

Actually that is what I was going to do. I have 2 Secas and one of the seats is very nice and the other is pretty ratty so that will be the one I send in. Thanks for the information from that site. I have looked at the gel seat pads but I am actually leaning toward the air hawk seat pad if we go again this year. I have one other question for you not related to the seat, is there a way to make sure the oil pump chain is tensioned and to check it for wear? I would hate to break down 1000 miles from home.

Hmmm maybe I'll pick one of those up before next season! The first one looks like it would be more comfortable than the stock seat.

Hey thanks MiGhost! I didn't realise I can get get one of those seat cover/foam combos to Canada for a total of $144 US. Not too shabby. I do a lot of commuting on my 81 Maxim, and the foam on my seat is...lacking. And it's "guaranteed" to fit my bike.

Throw that oil pump chain question out in another post. I am not familiar with that as yet. You will get better results with it under its own topic.

Always glad to help. Even if the question wasn't known!

Hey Eman1974, which slipstreamer III do you have what is your thoughts on it. I looked them up on that JC Whittney site. It got mixed reviews most of them were 3 out of 5... But I thought I'd ask you directly. I am looking for a windshield...

That's not gonna happen if you use Sargent's.

Back in the day, when Corbin first started, they were like Sargent's. You could send them virtually any seat and they would do it up for you, to your specifications. A buddy of mine still has the Norton seat they re-did for him some years back. But then they got BIG and stopped doing the "custom" work. Sargent's has filled the void very nicely.

Yes, they've done two seats for me so far; one a stock re-covering job and one a recontour and up-foam plus new cover.

    Highly Recommended.

I've done a few trips of 400-500 mi. on my bike. The thing that saved my a$$ was the highway pegs I bolted onto my crash bars. A strapped on backpack or something behind you to lean back on works great. Periodically changing where you put your feet changes your seating position and makes long rides quite bearable. When riding without the highway pegs, I try to put my butt back some and lean forward on my arms slightly. I almost have to force myself into this position, If I don't I tend to hang back on my arms. I too would like a more comfy seat, but these tips can help out until you find one.

Well I guess Sergent's it is then, re-contour and replace the old foam with that special stuff they put in the top 2 inches. Thanks to all for you input.

My advice is attend monthly "ride to eats". While at the last BMW ride to eat I discovered the gentleman across the table from me was going to have a custom seat made in Shasta, CA. I offered him $100 for the $1200 custom seats he currently had on his bike and he agreed to the transation. He didn't care as all he needed were the seat pans anyway.

I did have to to a little re-dye work and conditioning to bring it back into shape.

    Score!

You can get information on the web on what these custom seat mfg's do to the seats to rebuild them and how they do it. I can't believe that one couldn't improve the ride significantly by doing some research, and experimenting with various density foams and then either using your current seat cover if it still fits or hiring a local upholsterer for a reasonable price.

Interestingly enough the way these seats are made more comfortable is to make the foam firmer not softer. The ones who re-contour the seats sometimes add outrigger butt pads complete with steel support frames in order to better handle "the bulk". Others remove a VERY small portion of the original foam, replace it with a firmer product, and then sew up a fancy new leather cover..
