We are selling my wife's 1st motorcycle. A 1981 Maxim 550 in good condition except for leaky carb
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_W0QQcmd ... ESELXQ3aIT

She upgraded to a Vstar 1100 a couple years ago so this one has been in storage. Its time to let go. We are selling a couple bikes and some mowers.

Looking for suggestions on what the leaky carb solution might be

    Thanks

    Looks like a sweet ride.

I am not interested personally, but would like to offer some eBay advice.

Firstly, does it include a title? you dont mention.

I would also recommend saying a few great things about this bike in the first 2 or 3 lines in the ad. Then just a couple of the down-sides. Get rid of the "30 years old" bit entirely - essentially try to advertise and up-play its benefits.

And end on a good note in the last few lines.

You can also get rid of the anecdote about it leaking, moving it to a different stand etc. Simple state bluntly "slight carb leakage" or something quickly. Use your adjectives on that slick, shiny paint job, or the glimmering chrome. Perhaps even mention how much pep and zing these bikes can have.

    Best of luck

They are, aren't they? At first, I thought they were 550 Seca wheels, but upon closer inspection, they're not. They are XS wheels, plus somebody did a whole front-end transplant since the 550 Max didn't have dual discs either.

Your carb problem is a sticky/stuck/dirty float valve.

This was my wife's 1st bike. She wanted to get a scooter to save on gas when I found this one. She learned to ride and put on about 4,000 miles.

It is a sweet little bike.

Not sure of the wheel swap, but I know I got a '82 parts bike that has a different style wheel. thought maybe it was just a difference in years.

Your carb problem is a sticky/stuck/dirty float valve.

what do you recomend to resolve it if that is the problem?

If you want to actually fix it: Pull the carbs, clean them, and set the float levels using fuel and the "clear tube method."

But that will also then require a bench sync and a subsequent vacuum sync (with YICS blocked) which you can't do until the valves are in spec.

And you thought you were selling the bike.

I agree I could of put together a real slick ad, and possibly gotten an extra $100 But I would rather downplay how great the bike is and have a happy customer when they pick it up. and realize the deal they got
I stated it is a 30 yr old bike so some knucklehead isnt surprised when he doesnt get a showroom new bike for under $700
