maxim x will not idle after sitting for a few weeks

i bought this bike and rode it for 2 months and it ran and idled great. i let it sit for 3weeks and now it will not idle. i can choke it and it'll start easy, rev up but not idle. i get it out on the road, get the revs up, choke off and it'll run right up to redline and pull hard. but let off and it'll die. i've put cleaner in the tank and ran it for 10mins or so, let it sit over night and ran its some more. seems alittle better but not ridable. i've got 120miles on the gas in the tank, so it's good. put the petcock on pri and it still wont idle. got the idle adjustment all the way in, and out and inbetween. still doesnt help. i find it hard to believe that in a few weeks a perfect running bike is now crap. any help would be great.

Time to pull the carbs for cleaning.

 

With the bike not running stand on the right side of the bike and kneel down so that you can see what the throttle cable does at the carb end, then twist the throttle, release it and see what happens. Any play before the likage moves?
Could be something vibrated loose and not holding it at idle.
Have you done any work on the bike since you bought it?

 

Pull the carbs and clean, clean, clean. Follow the "Church of clean" post and don't skip any steps! Probably got gunk under the needle seats. I fought this same problem most of last year.....trust me and don't skip ANY steps.

 

Look for rust, any reddish material in the float bowls probly indicates rust in the tank.
