I have the chance of a US import '84 XJ750 standard road bike with 65,000 Km on the clock ... are there a lot of parts interchangeable with my '82 Maxim 750 J? The Hitachi carbs and the motor I assume would fit, Does anyone this side of the pond know of the availability of parts for this model?
The bike has not run for 18 months - worth it?
I don't really have anywhere to keep it and anything I don't want or don't have a use for e.g. frame forks tank and trim would be sold.
    Pic attached.

All the engine parts and carbs are interchangeable on all 750 models, the one pictured is one of the last Xj750s it just has cosmetic differences from the others engine and frame are the same.

    Thanks for that...
AND the frame too? - what about driveshaft and electrical gubbins, coils, reg/rec, relays etc The switchgear looks different so do the forks, although they would still fit I s'pose.

It does... He says before it was stood-up it was running OK, I only have his word for it though
I could get it for 200... maybe 150 even, I don't really have the time or storage/workspace to do it up.
Its a bit rustier than in the picture - I think the pic was taken a while back, when his wife first kicked it out of the garage to make room!
The front discs are vented and look VERY thin.
I doubt his mechanical skills as he told me the front callipers were sticking so he used emery cloth and WD40 to clean them, also he made exhaust header gasket rings from stainless pipe squashed in a vice and filed!!!

    Thats the prob Mark...
Its looking like The only real differences are the tank, seat, bars and other bits which make mine a custom style bike,
I was thinking of maybe getting it running, put tax/MOT on it and swapping the motors and carbs (my only problem areas) and selling it as a 'needs attention'. but as I have not heard it run, and the fact it has 40k on it, makes me nervous - he said himself they go for good money and are sought after, so why is he willing to let it go for so little? - mmmm.

I'm not sure how sought after they are - I read on this site the model was put together from available parts, hence the similarity to the 900 - rather than your 750.

The carbs are likely to need work if the bike has been stood - perhaps just as much trouble as your current bike?

If my neighbour had it - i'd buy it but it might be more trouble than it's worth for you?

    There's one near me on ebay taxed and mot'd for 425 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1985-YAMAHA-X ... 45fcdb8cb4

But the idea of bolting the motor straight in IS tempting... one of the inlet rubber screw threads (into the head) has completely gone on mine and although I botched a repair and it doesn't seem to be leaking, the motor has seen better days and I have no Idea of the mileage or history.

You guys in the Mother Country sure have some great words!

Is an electrical gubbin roughly similar to a physical or mechanical bit?

    Loren

Gubbins can be anything = bits and pieces!

For a country (Or countries - I'm sure jay considers himself Welsh) so small there are many regional variations to!
