I looked high and low through the forums and found nothing pertaining to my problem. I parked my bike in the garage for a few days due to rain and when I returned to start it up this morning, it turned over but wouldn't fire. Then it stopped working all together. The instrument cluster that showed the neutral light on, will not light and the bike wont turn over. I have no idea what happened. I am pretty upset because I have a trip coming up that I'm afraid I won't be able to go on if this bike isn't running. I hate working on electrical issues so I'm asking for some help.

How is your battery? Was the bike left in the 'on' position? Check your oil to see if it smells like gas. Could be a stuck float.

Did you crank and crank the motor? You could have worn down the battery as well.

You said it wouldn't fire then stopped working all together. So at this point you turn the key to the on position, they engine kill switch to on, and not even the neutral light comes on? Sounds to me at that point you should start with the battery. I'd hook it up to a tender and charge it to see it that brings her back to life.

First place to check is the battery. Get it fully charged and take it to the automotive to get it load tested.

Sounds like a flat battery and maybe a flaky neutral switch.

I would start with the battery; fully charge it and take it to the auto parts store and have it tested.

I hate to bring this up because it's totally unrelated to your problem, but--

With 9K miles on the bike, when were the valve clearances last checked? If always ignored, you're way overdue. If that's the case and you haven't checked them, you really ought to do that before you go on a trip and end up burning a valve.

Check your fuses too, especially the main. It may have either blown, or if you have the original fuse box, it could be corroded.

Good point. Even if not corroded, the orignal fuse clips crystallize and break all on their own. Rebuild or replace the fusebox if it hasn't been already; you wouldn't want to get stranded by something that simple.

I figured it out! I had a few different things going on.....lets start with the 3 blown fuses that apparently went simultaneously. Then there was the headlight issue that was pre-existing. The headlight was wired by the PO to ignition switched power and the high beam was disconnected. I have no idea why this was done but with the schematic I found on this site I was able to wire the headlight back up correctly. I am so happy I found this site. It has helped me imensely. Thanks Guys!
