    hey

my other coil has 3,1 ohms on the primary and 11400 ohms on the secondary.

the other has 4,5 ohms on the primary and i have failed to get a reading of the secondary.

when the bike was in one piece it was firing.

any thoughts? should i upgrade to dyna/accel stuff?

Did you remove the caps? The manual states you should test with the caps in place but they really should be removed....just poke your test lead into the end a bit.....when you are done testing, cut 1/4" off the end before reinstalling the caps. They simply screw on. Normally, it would indicate that you had a open coil but you said it had been firing.

As far as replacement, I'm not sure on your bike but I was worried about not getting the correct type of coils and the jetski dual lead coils I had installed worked but at the end of the day, I bought a new set of used turbo coils and installed them....but your right, they produce an anemic spark at best.....I'd recomend that you set the plug gap to the smaller end of the specs.

If you have a broken wire in the coil, the spark may still be able to arc across. Chacal carries some Dyna coils and suitable mounting brackets that are a nice upgrade from stock. Supposedly they allow for some quicker starting when cold.

Personally, I don't see a need to cut back the wires just because you've removed and are reinstalling the caps.

If the bike was firing, though, what was the motivation for measuring the coils?

    thanks jeff,

i measured without the caps. i cut few mm off the lead to get a better contact but nothing. i have tried multiple times on several occasions.

thats whats bugging me, i didnt LOOK, but the bike ran good so i would dare to say it wasnt running on two.

good recommendation with the gaps mate!

    hey sql, good points.

motivation was just for kicks, i have the bike ripped apart and i was reading the board about coils and i couldnt help but poke mine with a multimeter.

what about the over 3 and 4 ohms on the primary coils? i mean when is the time to replace them?

Primaries generally go from good (3 - 4 Ohms) to bad (open or many KOhms). 4.5 on your primary is probably a measurement error. I wouldn't worry about that.

Problems with these coils are much more commonly loss of continuity in the secondary - either from the coils themselves, or because the contact between the wires and the coil ends get broken. The non-replaceable wires were a really bad idea, and cracked wires are another typical problem. Lastly (maybe most commonly?) the cases themselves develop hairline cracks that make the coils pretty easily disturbed by damp conditions.
