Do you check the oil level (glass eye) with the bike on the ground and held upright or on the center stand?

    Thanks

No it is not the same at all. On the stand the back is much higher and will have less oil in the bike if set on the stand. I set it on the stand and when the bike is down it does not even read any oil. I have always filled it on the ground and now am thinking that I may have been over filling it.

Any one know the correct way to fill the oil?

If there's that big of a difference between being on the centerstand and being on the ground and held perfectly vertical, I'd go with on the ground, since that's the "attitude" it's in when you ride it.

My handy dandy 1981 XJ650H owners manual says on the center stand with the engine warmed up a few minutes. YMMV due to different model, but I noticed that the XJ4EVER catalog (top right corner of this page) seems to have owners manual reprints for pretty cheap (don't know about yours, I only looked at stuff for my model).

Both of my 550s and my 650 are the same, oil level is virtually the same with the bike on the centerstand or on the ground being held vertical.

Being on the sidestand makes oil disappear, as does running the motor. Unless the motor's fully warmed up, it needs to be off for a good ten minutes before checking.

    I suspect there's something different about his/the XJ1100.

I don't doubt you at all, I just figured I'd report what I had since I had it handy.

Frankly, I can't understand why the 1100 would be any different, unless he has a different centerstand or something.
